Trump snaps at reporter after she questions his $5,000 promise with national debt at $40 trillion

President Donald Trump recently engaged in a heated exchange with a journalist, snapping at her after she pressed him for details regarding his proposed $5,000 payment to adult Americans. This confrontation took place as the President was preparing to depart from Dallas following his attendance at a two-day Republican midterm convention. 

As reported by the Daily Beast, the interaction occurred outside of Air Force One, where the President was surrounded by a group of reporters. The incident serves as a significant moment in the current political climate as the nation grapples with a national debt that has reached $40 trillion.

During the midterm convention, President Trump outlined a plan that would provide $5,000 to every adult American if the Republican party secures a victory in the November elections. This proposal, which the President has referred to as Trump dividends, would cost approximately $1.35 trillion based on the current population of adult Americans. 

Trump says he’s giving people a reward 

Critics and financial analysts have raised concerns that such a massive expenditure could further increase the national debt and exacerbate existing inflationary pressures. Despite the scale of this promise, the President has yet to provide specific details on how this financial scheme would be funded or implemented.

When asked about the necessity of congressional approval for this plan during an earlier interview with Laura Ingraham, President Trump reportedly suggested that he did not believe it would be required, stating, “because we’ve made so much money.” While the announcement was met with enthusiasm from the crowd at the convention, the mood shifted when journalists inquired about the logistics and economic impact of the proposal.

The tension escalated when ABC reporter Rachel Scott questioned the President about the motivation behind the $5,000 promise. She specifically asked, “If your economic policies are working, why do you need an incentive for people to turn out to vote?” She also highlighted the significant $40 trillion debt currently held by the United States. 

In response, President Trump rejected the idea that the payment was intended to drive voter turnout. He stated, “I didn’t do it for turning out to vote, I’m doing it as a reward for people having to put up with five years and four years of a horrible situation caused by Biden.” 

He continued to criticize the previous administration, describing the situation as “just a horrible thing Biden did to our country,” and reiterated that the payment was meant to compensate citizens for their experience under past policies. The situation turned confrontational when Scott attempted to ask a follow-up question, which is standard practice in presidential press briefings. 

President Trump pointed at her and firmly stated, “Not you!” When she persisted by bringing up a previous, unfulfilled offer of tariff refund checks, the President moved closer to her and shouted, “Not you! Hey!” and then barked loudly at her, “Not you!” 

His demeanor appeared visibly agitated as he continued the interaction. He then pointed at Scott and remarked, “Your network and you, you’re the worst,” before shifting his attention to a male reporter to take another question.

Rachel Scott later shared the footage of this exchange on her X account, using the caption “My question to Trump tonight.” The video has since circulated widely, drawing attention to the volatile nature of the President’s relationship with the press corps.
