A Texas woman started updating her Tesla in a McDonald’s drive-thru, then realized the car wouldn’t move until it finished

A Texas woman got stuck at a McDonald’s drive-thru after she started updating her Tesla’s software right after getting her food. Amanda de la Rosa shared the incident on TikTok, where the video racked up five million views, over 471,500 likes, and more than 7,000 comments in just a few days.

As detailed by The Nerd Stash, the clip became her biggest video yet. Amanda often shares lifestyle content, news clips, dancing, and trading cards on her account.

In the video, Amanda is sitting in her Tesla with a couple of soft drinks, a McDonald’s burger, fries, and some sauces in the center console. The car’s screen displays only the Tesla logo, and she sounds defeated as she shares her advice.

Tesla updates don’t let you go anywhere until they finish

“Don’t ever update your Tesla when you’re in the freaking drive-thru at McDonald’s,” she said. “Don’t ever update… I repeat, do not update your car, your Tesla, whenever you’re in the drive-thru.”

Tesla software updates disable the car’s driving functions while they install, and the process can take up to an hour. That left Amanda stuck in the drive-thru, potentially holding up the customers behind her.

This wasn’t Amanda’s only Tesla issue, as another video showed her car’s summon function not working properly. In a follow-up to the drive-thru clip, she showed what the update actually gave her: a ghost costume for her Tesla avatar. “It’s pretty awesome,” Amanda said, before admitting, “Was it worth it? Probably not.”

Many viewers were aghast at her decision to update in the drive-thru. One person commented, “I would’ve called a tow if I worked there,” while another pointed out, “It tells you MULTIPLE times it gives you 2 minutes to cancel and you still went for it…” The clip went viral days after another TikToker said her new Tesla had the wrong interior when she went to pick it up.

Others were more direct, with one writing, “Better yet, don’t ever buy a Tesla.” Another added, “Your first mistake was buying a Tesla.”
