Bride refuses to let mom wear her old prom dress to wedding, and their disagreement quickly gets expensive

Planning a wedding is stressful enough without family drama, but this situation takes a turn that is honestly pretty wild. A bride recently took to Reddit to ask if she overreacted after threatening to ban her own mother from her wedding. The core of the issue reportedly involves a specific prom dress that seems to carry a lot of complicated history.

As reported by the Daily Dot, the mother has lost a significant amount of weight lately, and the bride mentioned that she is proud of her. However, the relationship is clearly strained by a long history of comments regarding the bride’s weight. The bride claimed that her mother frequently insists she weigh herself or report her weight, often bringing up how beautiful she looked back when she could fit into that specific prom dress.

The bride and her fiancé actually made a pact to lose weight together before the big day because they want to feel their best for the photos. The bride noted that her fiancé is supportive and motivates her. In contrast, the prom dress represents a time when the bride was at her skinniest, but she also associates it with having an eating disorder and feeling very depressed. 

Her mother reportedly withdrew her financial support 

She explained that everyone attending the wedding has seen photos of her in that dress and has compared her past self to her current self, which creates a lot of pressure. Things reportedly came to a head when the mother called the bride and said, “I’m going to lose enough weight to wear your prom dress to your wedding.” 

The bride reacted immediately and told her that if she wore that dress, she would not be allowed at the wedding. She felt it was necessary to draw a hard line, stating, “That dress represents my past, and I don’t want it brought into my future.”

The situation escalated quickly after that. The mother reportedly decided to withdraw her financial support for the wedding. To make matters worse, she also made a jab at the bride by saying, “I’m not going to look good in a wedding dress anyway if I don’t get down to the size where I can wear that dress again.” The bride suspects that her mother announced the plan to wear the dress specifically to get a reaction.

The community on Reddit largely sided with the bride, with many people pointing out that the issue goes much deeper than just a piece of clothing. One commenter suggested, “A good first step is to stop letting her mom plan it! (‘I’m planning my wedding, and of course she has to be in charge of every detail.’)
