A police officer in Polk County, Georgia, is currently on administrative leave following the death of a baby donkey named HeeHaw. This incident occurred while law enforcement officials were reportedly conducting an overnight search for a missing person.
As reported by Newsweek, events reportedly took place at the property of Elsberry Riding and Farm. According to a social media post from the farm, when officers entered the pasture area, the donkey reportedly approached them while making noise. The post further claims that the officers attempted to use a Taser on the animal before one officer ultimately fired a fatal shot.
The owner of the donkey, Hannah Israel, shared her perspective on a GoFundMe page established to cover legal expenses. She wrote, “My bottle baby donkey ‘HeeHaw’ was killed in his own pasture on Saturday night by trespassing cops. He was a loved member of our family and did many petting zoos and made many people smile. We are raising money to lawyer fees. Anything not used for lawyer will go directly back to the animals care and feed. Help me get justice for HeeHaw!”
The owner is taking legal action
The community response has been substantial, with the fundraiser collecting over $72,000 toward a $90,000 goal. In a separate social media post, Israel described the animal as a central part of her life. She shared, “There is no way this is legal! I will be taking legal action. Share this everywhere and get justice for HeeHaw. We are heart broken, he was my SON!!”
The investigation into the shooting is currently being handled by the Cedartown Police Department. Chief Jamie Newsome claimed that the department command staff has launched a formal review of the incident. While the officer who fired the shot has been placed on administrative leave, their identity has not been released to the public.
It is worth noting that the Polk County Sheriff’s Office has clarified that its deputies were not involved in the incident. Despite this, the sheriff’s office issued a statement acknowledging the community’s reaction. According to the office, “We extend our sincere condolences to the family and everyone affected by this unfortunate incident,” adding that they understand “the concern and sadness surrounding what occurred.”
HeeHaw was well known to the local community, having been raised in a home environment and frequently participating in petting zoos. His presence was documented across various social media channels, where he gained a following due to his friendly nature.
