A viral video is exposing the incredibly questionable steak topping that Longhorn Steakhouse calls “love butter,” and honestly, the name alone is enough to ruin your appetite. When a steak arrives at your table covered in a pool of cloudy white liquid, and the server tells you it’s “love butter,” you’re gonna have some serious questions about what exactly you’re about to eat.
Content creator Jarret Trone, who uses the handle @big_muvaamusic89, captured his friend’s utterly baffled reaction to the meal. The video quickly went viral, racking up more than 2.6 million views, because the visual is just that suspicious. The sauce was pooling right on top of the steak and dripping down onto the plate, looking like something you definitely didn’t order.
“A Longhorn, I don’t know what the f— y’all got going on, but they sent this out to my friend talking about this with some love butter,” he said. “But I don’t know about it.” Trone immediately pointed out that the name, “love—love butter—is kinda gross.” His friend even tested the sauce’s consistency with a finger. It wasn’t sticky, but watery, which somehow made the whole situation look even weirder.
The public certainly agreed with their initial assessment
Luckily, there is a completely reasonable explanation for the strange topping, though I seriously think the restaurant needs to fire whoever came up with that name. It turns out that the mystery liquid isn’t mysterious at all. Several commenters, claiming to be former Longhorn employees, jumped in to clarify the situation: it’s just lemon butter basting sauce.
One person who identified themselves as a cook at the restaurant shared a hilarious anecdote about the internal confusion. “Pleaseee im a cook at a longhorn i promise its just a lemon butter basting sauce we put on the steaks and pork chops but when i first got hired and they told me to ‘love the steaks’ and handed me that i was very much confused,” they wrote.
If you can get past the unfortunate name, you might be pleased to know that Longhorn is actually a treasure trove of butter-based secrets. A former employee who worked there for nearly a decade shared some awesome insider knowledge.
The ex-employee also confirmed that the chain goes incredibly hard on butter and rich, creamy sauces in general. That famous parmesan crust topping, which everyone seems to adore, is made from a mix of homemade ranch dressing, garlic, herbs, grated parmesan, panko breadcrumbs, and even more cheese. What’s cool is that customers have successfully requested this crust on almost everything, including salmon, steak tips, and even mashed potatoes. Just don’t get ketchup with your steak.
If you’re planning a trip to try out these butter secrets, don’t forget to snag a free appetizer. You just have to sign up for their email club beforehand. That’s a great way to start your meal, even if you’re still a little wary about ordering anything that has been “loved.” While you’re at it, make sure you’re not overtipping because a server said it’s their birthday.
