Texas woman put up fliers about her stolen Halloween rug, then security footage pointed to someone living right next door

A Houston woman’s hunt for a stolen Halloween doormat ended much closer to home than she expected. TikTok user Molly, who posts as @mollyworld96, shared a video in which she covered her apartment building in missing posters before security cameras pointed to the alleged culprit, as reported by The Nerd Stash. The clip, captioned “rug thief,” has drawn hundreds of thousands of views.

The doormat featured three horror icons, Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, and went missing shortly after Molly moved in. Rather than shrug it off, she printed “Have you seen me?” fliers and stuck them outside her door, along the hallways and stairwells, at the building entrance and beside an elevator. The video shows her posting them one by one across the complex.

The search led her to the leasing office, which pulled the footage. “My apartment complex pulled up the cameras. It was my neighbor,” Molly says in the clip, adding that she could see his back porch from her seat. She appears stunned as she delivers the news on camera. According to her, the footage showed him walking up to her door, rolling up the doormat and leaving with it.

The neighbor brought the doormat back after the leasing office called him

Molly also included audio of the apartment staff’s phone call to the neighbor in her TikTok. On the call, a staff member tells him that Molly is looking to “press charges” if the doormat is not returned. The video ends with a reveal showing the mat back in front of her door, as the neighbor apparently returned it soon after the conversation.

Many viewers were most entertained by how the leasing office handled the situation. One commenter called the staff member “the goat” for bringing up charges, while another quoted the agent asking that it never happen again, as the call was weird for everyone involved. A third admitted that taping fliers onto the painted walls with duct tape “feels diabolical.”

Others were more puzzled by the neighbor’s motive, as nothing in the video explains why the mat was taken. One person wondered whether he wanted to use it inside his own apartment or was “weirdly offended by it.” Another viewer questioned whether the leasing office hands out any consequences for theft at all, given that the matter appeared to end once the doormat came back.

Molly’s flier campaign also struck a chord with people who have tried something similar. One commenter said she once made her own flier after someone stole her table, and several others urged Molly to install a doorbell camera to protect future deliveries. However, the video does not say whether the complex took any further action against the neighbor after the call.

The discovery fits a familiar pattern in viral theft stories where the suspect turns out to be someone close by, much like the woman who learned a friend secretly sold her belongings over the course of a year. The Halloween doormat was a small item. The person accused of taking it, however, lived only steps from Molly’s front door.

The doormat appears to be safely back in place for Halloween, though the comments suggest a doorbell camera could be the next addition to Molly’s front door.

Attack of the Fanboy was unable to independently verify the neighbor’s side of the story, as this account originates solely from Molly’s TikTok video.
