“You making up stuff”: Subway customer confronts employee over alleged charge for toasting bread

A viral video on TikTok has ignited a heated debate about sandwich shop policies after a customer confronted a Subway employee over a disputed charge for toasting his bread. The situation escalated quickly as the customer challenged the worker, insisting that he had never encountered such a fee during his years of visiting the chain.

As reported by Daily Dot, the footage, which was posted by @daydaytvuncut1, captures the moment the customer demanded a refund while claiming the employee was inventing policies on the fly. The core of the disagreement centers on whether or not a customer should pay extra for toasted bread. The customer was firm in his belief that this service should be included in the price of the meal. “Never in the history of me going to Subway have they ever charged a toast. Toast is free,” the customer said.

When the employee attempted to explain the store policy and noted that he had confirmed the toasting request before beginning the sandwich, the customer refused to accept the explanation. He pushed back against the employee, telling him, “No, no, no. They don’t do that, bro. You making up stuff, bro.”

He claims the employee was doing this on purpose

Beyond the pricing dispute, the customer also expressed deep frustration with the technical assembly of his sandwich. He claimed the employee was preparing the order incorrectly by suggesting that specific ingredients like lettuce should not be toasted. He also insisted that items such as bacon and cheese must be added before the sandwich goes into the toaster, rather than after.

He reportedly told the employee, “You supposed to toast it when you put the, you know this already.” Things took a turn toward the accusatory when the customer suggested the worker was intentionally sabotaging the meal. He told the employee, “You’re trying to contaminate my sandwich by putting it in there. That’s crazy, bro.”

Because of these combined grievances, the customer decided he no longer wanted the sandwich. He demanded a refund, citing concerns about his own comfort and the quality of the service. “Can you give me my refund? I don’t want to eat here. I don’t feel safe. I don’t feel safe. That was crazy,” he said.

He eventually informed the employee that the entire ordeal would be posted online for others to see. “Now you on TikTok. Now I’m about to go viral over here because you trying to charge me for toasting and you f—— up my order. That’s crazy,” he stated. The video concludes with the customer checking his payment method, clearly feeling confused about whether the charge had actually cleared on his card.

The online reaction to this video has been just as divided as the situation itself. Some people in the comments section claimed they have actually seen these charges at various locations. One person wrote, “Nahhh subway do charge to toast its been like that since I’ve been working and for my mom too who’s been working for subway almost 20+ years.”

Other commenters were quick to defend the worker, pointing out that employees usually just follow the rules set by management or the store owners. One commenter noted, “Yelling at the worker like he can control the policy omg ur doing the most.” It is a fair point, as most front-line workers have very little power to change corporate or store-level pricing structures. Another commenter observed, “Refund? Who pays before getting the sandwich at subway.”
