The Miami Dolphins lost badly to the Baltimore Ravens, falling 28-6 at home. This brought their season record down to 2-7. What made things worse was that the team had just beaten the Atlanta Falcons convincingly four days earlier, which gave fans hope that things were turning around.
According to CBS Sports, head coach Mike McDaniel was clearly frustrated during the game and talked about it afterwards. “It sucks. That sucks. All of that does,” McDaniel told reporters. “But I think it’s a pretty consistent formula of fans enjoy winning.”
“Our expectations is we have to do the work and do the right things for fans to enjoy the experience. Unfortunately, we didn’t do that tonight so we’ve got to get back to work to give them something to cheer about.” he added. Some fans were so upset they put paper bags and popcorn buckets over their heads.
The numbers tell the real story
The game started out close enough, with Miami down 14-6 at halftime. But they had wasted several good chances to score touchdowns. After the break, things got ugly. Baltimore scored 14 more points while keeping Miami off the board completely.
Lamar Jackson came back from injury and threw four touchdown passes. The home fans started booing as their team’s offense stopped working and the Ravens took over.
There was one number from the first half that shows exactly what went wrong. Miami had the ball for about two-thirds of the half but only put up six points. Baltimore, on the other hand, scored touchdowns every single time they got close to the end zone.
McDaniel pointed this out when talking to the media. “Getting six points in the first half with having, I think, two-thirds time of possession if I remember correctly – that’s setting up for failure,” he said.
“They were 3-for-3 in the red zone and we didn’t score a touchdown. There was elements of the football confidence created last week, but the bottom line is you have to cross your t’s and dot your i’s in the National Football League or you get made pay.”
The fans made their feelings clear by booing and covering their faces. It showed that people who support this team want to see real changes happen soon.
What comes next for Miami does not look easy. They get a bye week to rest and figure things out. After that, they play two hard games against the Buffalo Bills and Washington Commanders. There are easier games coming up against the New Orleans Saints and New York Jets, but three of the last four games are against good teams. The AFC East division has been tough to compete in all year.
Making the playoffs is basically impossible now. Miami is sitting in 14th place in the AFC and third in their own division. They are five games behind the leader with just eight games left to play. McDaniel knows how bad things are but says the team has to keep trying.
“Sometimes you have to press forward and put more in, even when you get punched in the stomach,” he said. “It’s very, very disappointing and, unfortunately, we’re going to have to sit on that disappointment for 10 days.” Even with superstars and some strong players, the team has not been able to put together consistent performances.
