Viewers are having trouble telling if this video of ‘Neil DeGrasse Tyson confirming earth is flat’ is real

The consquences could be grim.

A video of Neil deGrasse Tyson saying he believes the Earth is flat has shocked people who watched it. Tyson is a famous scientist who studied at Harvard and won an award from NASA. He usually teaches people about space and science.

According to Lad Bible, Tyson seems to say things that go completely against what he has always believed. It looks like he is suddenly supporting one of the most ridiculous conspiracy theories out there.

But then Tyson says he “can’t escape the conclusion that the Earth might actually be flat” and quickly reveals what is really going on. He tells viewers that “that’s not me, it was never me, those aren’t my words, that’s what’s called a deepfake.” He shared this in his latest video on StarTalk, which is his YouTube channel where he talks about science and interviews guests.

This is actually pretty scary when you think about it

People who watched the video said they were really worried about this kind of technology. A lot of them said they could not tell it was fake when they first saw it. One person wrote that “the worst part is not just people being tricked by fake things, but how it sows distrust in things that are real.”

Someone else made a joke about how the video title fooled people, saying “2 minute silence for the flat-earthers who believed the video title.” Another viewer said that “clickbaiting the flat earthers is hilarious.”

The video has made people talk about needing better laws against deepfakes. One viewer said that “if signature forgery is illegal, there’s gotta be a law that protects our entire identity from deepfakes.” Other people want social media websites to put warning labels on videos made by AI.

Tyson talked about how he did not really understand how dangerous deepfakes were until people started making fake videos of him. He said most of these fake videos have wrong information or completely made up science facts.

His friend Terry Crews, who is an actor, believed one of the fake videos about advanced civilizations. Crews said it “scared” him when Tyson told him it was not real. This is not the first time AI-generated voices have fooled people online, since this kind of technology has been making fake videos that go viral all over the internet.

Tyson said that fake science videos are bad, but fake videos of politicians are even worse. He explained that when you can make a world leader say something they never actually said, it “affects the stability of peace in the world.”

A cybersecurity expert named Alex Cosoi was in the video and said that during the start of the war between Ukraine and Russia, lots of fake videos showed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy giving up.

This problem has even shown up in American politics recently, with Andrew Cuomo getting criticized for using a deepfake video of his opponent Zohran Mamdani in the race to become New York’s mayor. With technology getting better every day, more people are worried about how companies are tracking and monitoring people’s behavior in ways that feel like they are invading privacy.
