Amanda Seyfried is absolutely standing her ground regarding her controversial comments about Charlie Kirk following his tragic assassination, stating that she won’t apologize for calling him “hateful.” The Housemaid star recently spoke out about the massive outcry she faced after making the social media comment. In an interview published by Who What Wear, she made it incredibly clear that she feels strongly about this, and she isn’t worried about the continued backlash she might face.
“I’m not f*****g apologizing for that,” she stated plainly. “I mean, for f***’s sake, I commented on one thing.” The actress explained that she felt her comments were rooted in reality and were not just random personal attacks. She defended her original statement by noting that what she said was based on “actual reality and actual footage and actual quotes.” She feels that her opinion is justified because the statement was “pretty damn factual.”
When the comments about Kirk first went viral, Seyfried quickly found herself in the middle of a major social media storm. The backlash prompted her to share a post on her own Instagram page to explain her views more thoroughly. She wanted to make sure her audience understood that it wasn’t an either/or situation.
Amanda certainly believes she is free to have an opinion, as anyone else is
She explained that she can absolutely get angry about things like “misogyny and racist rhetoric.” However, she stressed that this anger can exist simultaneously with the fact that she “very much agree[s] that Charlie Kirk’s murder was absolutely disturbing and deplorable in every way imaginable.” Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk’s widow, is still standing firmly behind the 2nd Amendment, however.
It seems like the biggest issue for Seyfried was the way her initial comment was immediately taken out of context. She stated that she is thankful she was able to offer that clarification to her followers. She noted that the entire process was about “getting my voice back” because she felt like it had been “stolen and recontextualized.” That’s often what happens in the public sphere, of course, but it must be frustrating when you feel like your intent is being completely twisted.
As you may recall, Kirk was fatally shot in the neck on September 10 while he was speaking at a Turning Point USA event. The incident took place at Utah Valley University. It was a truly shocking event that captured national attention.
The alleged killer, Tyler Robinson, was quickly apprehended and is currently behind bars. He is awaiting trial for the assassination. Robinson is scheduled to make an in-person appearance in a Utah County, Utah, court on Thursday. That hearing is set to review the current status of his legal case. We’ll be watching for any updates on that front as the legal process moves forward.
