President Trump has delivered an ultimatum to House Republicans, declaring that he won’t sign any other bills until the “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act” is passed, as reported by The Hill. He firmly believes that enacting this legislation will “guarantee the midterms” for the GOP.
“It will guarantee the midterms. If you don’t get it, big trouble,” Trump stated during the House GOP’s annual issues conference in Florida. He emphasized that the American people are clamoring for this specific legislation.
“The people are demanding it. Every time I go out, save America! Save America! We want the SAVE America Act! That’s all they talk about. They don’t talk about housing. They don’t talk about anything. That’s what they talk about. And if you send it up there, you will win the midterms and you will win every election for a long time,” Trump added, making a bold prediction about its electoral impact.
The SAVE America Act itself is designed to overhaul voting requirements
The SAVE Act would mandate proof of citizenship for voter registration and require the presentation of an ID to cast a ballot in elections. This bill actually cleared the House back in February with a close 218-213 vote, but it has since hit a roadblock in the Senate. Democrats there have voiced strong opposition, arguing that the measure would create unnecessary barriers to voting for many citizens. For the bill to pass the Senate, it would need support from some Senate Democrats to overcome a potential filibuster.
But Trump isn’t stopping there. He’s pushing House Republicans to draft an even more ambitious version of the bill. He wants additional provisions included, such as strict limits on mail-in ballots, allowing them only for specific cases like illness, disability, military service, or travel. On top of that, he’s advocating for a prohibition on transgender athletes participating in women’s sports.
“If you could, if I could ask the people in this room, to go for the gold. We are going for the gold,” Trump urged. “We’re not going for the bronze. We’re not going to sign a watered-down version like it’s been sent up there. Let’s go for the gold, and let’s just not accept anything else. I will tell you what, I’m willing to just sort of say I’m not going to sign anything until this is approved.” Trump had already signaled this intention over the weekend in a Truth Social post, where he said he “will not sign other Bills until this is passed.”
This declaration immediately drew a sharp response from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Writing on X, Schumer called the proposed legislation “Jim Crow 2.0,” asserting that it “would disenfranchise tens of millions of people.” He didn’t mince words, stating, “If Trump is saying he won’t sign any bills until the SAVE Act is passed, then so be it: there will be total gridlock in the Senate. Senate Democrats will not help pass the SAVE Act under any circumstances.”
