Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is currently facing a wave of criticism from within his own Republican Party, with one congresswoman even suggesting his Oval Office credentials should be revoked. This intense backlash comes as many Republicans grow increasingly concerned about a potential escalation of President Trump’s war in Iran.
Graham, a well-known war hawk and a close ally of President Trump, has drawn sharp fire in recent weeks for advocating that the administration increase military pressure on Iran and send more troops overseas, as reported by The Hill. He even called for the U.S. Marines to seize Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil export hub. Graham suggested, “We did Iwo Jima, we can do this.” He directly addressed President Trump, advising him to “Keep it up for a few more weeks, take Kharg Island where all of the resources they have to produce oil, control that island, let this regime die on a vine.”
Earlier this month, Graham also floated the idea of sending more troops overseas, urging U.S. allies in the Middle East to step up their support. He stated, “I go back to South Carolina, I’m asking them to send their sons and daughters over to the Middle East. What I want you do in the Middle East, to our friends in Saudi Arabia and other places, step forward and say, ‘This is my fight, too. I join America. I’m publicly involved in bringing this regime down.’”
These comments, alongside Graham’s long-standing support for overthrowing the Iranian regime, have fueled significant pushback from an anti-interventionist faction of the GOP
Representative Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), who is running for governor, responded on X, writing, “What in the world would possess anyone to say this? I do not want to send South Carolina’s sons and daughters into war with Iran.” Mace didn’t stop there, also posting, “Washington’s war machine is hard at work. They are try to drag us into Iran to make it another Iraq. We can’t let them. And yes, when we say Washington’s war machine, we mean Lindsey Graham.”
Conservative commentator Meghan McCain, daughter of the late Senator John McCain, also weighed in, taking a jab at the man who was once her father’s closest friend. She wrote on social media, “Nothing like a single, childless, septuagenarian telling American mothers to send their children to go possibly die in a war.”
Some of the attacks on Graham became even more personal. Representative Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) took issue with Graham’s apparent influence in the White House. When asked by a reporter if she thinks Graham should “have such a prominent role in the execution of the war,” Cammack responded directly, “I absolutely think he should have his Oval Office credentials revoked.”
Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) wrote on X, “There are some in the Senate that advocate for war everywhere. Lindsey Graham is one of them. He does NOT tell the President what to do, nor does he control Congress. I have spoken with the administration a number of times, as well as other members of Congress over the last week or so, and nothing has changed regarding boots on the ground. NO BOOTS on the ground. If Senator Graham wants to go fight in a foreign conflict, let him be the first to volunteer.”
