This United Airlines flight was having a routine journey, but mysterious beeping made pilots start an emergency evacuation

They were quick to feel a bomb threat.

While safety is a crucial concern regardless of the means of transport, airplanes are something that requires way more attention. This is because if something goes wrong, you can’t just park a plane in a corner and check what’s wrong before continuing. Since the safety precautions are on extra alert, sometimes these can lead to bizarre events, as happened with this United Airlines flight.

As reported by The Sun, a routine flight from Chicago to New York turned into a nightmare for the passengers, as it was for the Spirit passengers watching the wing being taped. This is because the situation quickly transitioned into a bomb threat when the pilots noticed a “beeping noise” from an item that was placed into the aircraft.

The on-board audio which was posted on LiveATC.net concerned pilots and one of them said, “We’ve got an issue up here. We’re getting a sequential beeping of a suspected item onboard. We are going to have to start treating this as a potential bomb,” he also added, “We are going to need to go and start a diversion and get things settled.” The airplane then made an emergency landing at Pittsburgh International Airport to sort out this horrific matter.

The passengers were forced to empty the plane through the emergency slides

The pilot also shared further details of what he was feeling, which ultimately led him to believe that the threat seemed serious. He said, “It’s a beeping noise, sequential, one beep per second.” The pattern fueled his curiosity, and then he deduced the location of this beeping object, saying, “It’s underneath the door, it’s underneath the floorboards.”

With this “potential security concern” in mind, the passengers and the crew were then forced to evacuate. The slides of the aircraft were deployed on the runway, and a total of 159 passengers and 6 crew members safely made it out of the plane at Pittsburgh International Airport. After that, an FBI spokesperson said to KDKA-TV, “FBI Special Agent Bomb Techs and Special Agents are on the ground coordinating with local authorities.”

As the situation sounded alarming, the bomb squad then talked about the threat. As per People, the spokesperson from the Allegheny County Police Department was called, and then the department said, “Our EOD [Explosive Ordnance Disposal] team and K9s conducted a sweep of the aircraft, passengers and luggage with negative results.”
Waking up mid-flight due to a weird yoga ritual may sound bearable, but having a bomb alert is something that is significantly frightening. The passengers were rebooked to another flight while the source of the sound is still under investigation.
