Glam influencer died during a Texas Ironman swim, but friends say she ignored a serious warning about her health before entering the water

The investigation into the death of 38-year-old fitness influencer Mara Flávia is ongoing after she drowned during the swim portion of the Ironman Texas competition. According to New York Post, authorities confirmed that her body was recovered from approximately 10 feet of water in Lake Woodlands on the morning of April 20.

While the circumstances of the tragedy are being reviewed by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, a close friend has revealed that Flávia was battling the flu in the days leading up to the race. Luis Taveira, who described himself as a close friend of the Brazil-born athlete, shared that he and his wife had urged her to pull out of the grueling event because she was physically weakened.

“She was ill before the trip, she wasn’t okay,” Taveira said. “My wife and I spoke with her to say she was too weak for this race, although a couple of days ago when we talked to her, she insisted she was okay.” Taveira noted that despite her condition, Flávia continued training hard right up until the event. Only two days before the competition, she posted a photo of herself in a swimming costume by a pool with the caption, “Just another day at work.”

Friends literally told her not to race, and she still went

The Ironman Texas event is a massive undertaking that begins with a 2.4-mile swim, followed by a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run. The women’s swim portion officially started at 6:31 a.m. on April 20. According to Woodlands Fire Chief Palmer Buck, emergency crews were first notified of a missing swimmer around 7:30 a.m. Rescuers faced difficult conditions, as the ongoing race and poor visibility in the water hampered the search efforts. Her body was eventually pulled from the lake just after 9:30 a.m.

The tragedy has left a significant impact on those who were present. One Ironman volunteer, who was on the water during the event, described the frantic moments when witnesses realized Flávia had disappeared. He recounted that other racers told him, “She went under. Right here. Right below us.” The volunteer spent time diving into the water in a desperate search, at one point feeling her body beneath him. He wrote that he kept searching because he was convinced he would pull her up alive.

Flávia was well-known to her more than 60,000 Instagram followers for her intense dedication to fitness. Her social media feed was filled with motivational messages about hard work and transformation. In one post, she wrote, “Not every victory is photogenic, not every growth is pretty to watch. Sometimes evolving is being silent, stepping back, saying no, crying in the background, and coming back the next day more aware.” Her sister, Melissa Araújo, has since paid tribute to her, describing her as a person who lived life with immense determination.

“You never did anything halfway; perhaps that is why you left such a profound mark on the lives of everyone who crossed your path,” she wrote on Instagram. Ironman Texas released a statement on Facebook expressing their sympathies to the athlete’s family and friends. Such tragic incidents highlight the growing danger in aquatic sports as the CDC’s drowning prevention team was laid off due to federal budget cuts, leaving a critical gap in expert safety oversight.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that its Major Crimes unit is handling the investigation, which is standard protocol for this type of incident.
