We have heard about a toddler dying because of the parents’ negligence. But there are cases where the situation gets worse when the carelessness is paired with torture and abuse. An incident of this sort took place in Kentucky, where a couple was charged with severe abuse of three children who were in their custody. They were starved and tortured for years before the guardians were finally caught.
According to People, Mary Hall and Jerome Norman were arrested in January 2025 and were charged with child abuse and torture. WYMT reported that Kentucky state police were informed of a child who had bruises over his body when he was observed while returning to school. After returning from holidays, he had “chipped teeth and a busted nose.” Even though the child kept saying that he had been packing wood, Mary, her caregiver, declared that he might have done it in his sleep. Things got suspicious.
After constant signs of discomfort on the child’s body, a warrant was filed, and the alleged abusers were arrested after the warrant stated the child was “not allowed to eat at home due to discipline.” His teachers noticed that he’d often “gorge himself when he eats at school.” They were kept in prison for a year until they were both sentenced to 20 years of prison individually. They were declared guilty of one count of second-degree abuse and a single count of first-degree child abuse.
Mary Hall took in her late sister’s kids after a fatal car crash, then turned their lives into a nightmare
When Mary Hall’s sister passed away in a 2018 car crash, she became the guardian of three children. Later, in 2023, Mary moved with her boyfriend, Norman, to Pike County with her sister’s kids. However, the mother wasn’t the only parent these children were missing, as their father was also absent. Bill Slone, Pike County Commonwealth’s Attorney, reported, “Not only did they lose their mother, they also lost their father. Their father was convicted of some type of manslaughter and went to prison.”
After someone reported signs of child abuse, they found the kids locked in a tiny room. The windows were covered with boards, and the door had a lock on the outside. Olivia Dotson, an employee of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, reported to the court, “Imagine being a child who is hurt by the people who are meant to protect you. These children are not serving a sentence; they are living one.” She went on to claim that the oldest child “sucked the insulation in the walls to get water.”
Following a 17-year-old shot by a man in the name of revenge, incidents related to teenagers and kids appear to be making headlines often. Coming back to this case, there were reports that the oldest child had to be hospitalized multiple times, and at one time for about two and a half months. Prosecutors declared that this couple did everything with a clearer mind just to abuse the children, so they should be given the maximum sentence.
Even though the couple has been sentenced to 25 years, this case brought the dark reality of the care of orphans in the country. The rules are there, but still, there are people vicious enough to carry out crimes like this.
