Sony is cutting the price of the PlayStation Vita in Japan, according to a  broadcast earlier this morning dedicated to news about the handheld. Starting on February 28th, Japan will see the PS Vita priced at 19,980 Yen, which is the equivalent of around $200 USD.

Sony has yet to confirm a price drop for the PS Vita anywhere outside of Japan just yet, but this could be announced at the PlayStation Event later this week. The price drop applies to both the 3G and Wi-Fi versions of the handheld.

A price cut for the Vita could get sales going for the device which has failed to pick up steam since its 2011 launch. Nintendo who faced similar circumstances in Japan, slashed the price of their 3DS handheld following its release and saw sales skyrocket soon after. We’ll have to wait and see how Japanese consumers react to the price cut, and whether Sony has plans to drop the price in North America and Europe as well to stimulate sales for the device.
