The Last of Us released last month, and since then it’s gotten a ton of praise heaped on it for a wonderful narrative, jaw-dropping visuals, and creative new gameplay approach from Naughty Dog.  Game purchasers have responded, and flocked to retailers in droves to pick up the PlayStation 3 exclusive.

As of July 3rd, The Last of Us has sold roughly 3.5 million copies worldwide.  “The teams at Naught Dog are true visionaries and their storytelling capabilities are second to none, this title is an undisputed demonstration of that.  SCE continues to be committed to delivering unique gameplay experiences that redefine the interactive entertainment industry and The Last of Us is a perfect example,” said Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida.

3.5 million copies is really good for a platform exclusive game on the PlayStation 3.  2013’s other critical darling, Bioshock Infinite, sold only a few hundred thousand more copies in its first two months on the market.  These sales tallies come from both physical copies and digital copies, as The Last of Us was a day one digital offering on the PlayStation Network.

What’s next for the teams at Naughty Dog?  Well they’ve got a robust multiplayer offering to look after in The Last of Us for the time being, but the developers have come out and said that The Last of Us was not going to get the sequel treatment.  There have been rumors that Naughty Dog is secretly coding away on Uncharted 4 for the PlayStation 4, but this game has yet to be announced.
