When Sledgehammer Games was working on Modern Warfare 3 leading up to its 2011 release, they were preparing to launch one of the biggest shooter franchises in the world against DICE’s Battlefield 3. While sales numbers ultimately told the tale of Call of Duty retaining the top spot, Sledgehammer is still keeping an eye on their Stockholm competitors — especially in the area of sound, where DICE has consistently wowed Battlefield fans and critics alike.

“We’re constantly monitoring everything they do, says Veca”

Speaking with Game Informer in a recent interview, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare sound director Don Veca explains how the audio team is pushing to make Advanced Warfare the best sounding Call of Duty game to date. “We’ve studied the hell out of movies, to understand how that they’re really getting that focused mix. As for Battlefield, Veca says “we’re constantly monitoring everything they do, playing their games, trying to figure out what they’re doing that sounds great. And also saying, Ok, well that’s not so great. Let’s don’t do that, and lets keep doing what we do really well, but lets retain what’s useful… “Then suck in what’s cool from, not just one competitor, but multiples.”

Bottom line though, Veca says that Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is the best sounding game that he’s ever worked on — far better than even Dead Space which won numerous awards in its 2008 release.
