After selling close to a million copies just in Japan, causing near sell outs nationwide, it looks like Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS is on its way to becoming a worldwide best-seller. Nintendo announced today that, due to strong launches in the Americas, Europe, and Australia the game has sold more than 2.8 million copies in all territories.

Strong launches…have propelled the cumulative sales total for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS to more than 2.8 million

Nintendo made the announcement by saying “Strong launches in the Americas, Europe and Australia* have propelled the cumulative sales total for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS to more than 2.8 million sold worldwide. This first-ever portable installment of the game has resonated both with fans and critics, and its initial sales set Nintendo up for a strong holiday season.”

Nintendo feels that the announcement of the official release date for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will help carry this momentum into the holiday season. While that version will likely not sell quite as many total units, it is probably more important for Nintendo’s long term plans. The 3DS has already been a hit, so the sales from super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS are a nice bonus. However, the Wii U continues to struggle and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is definitely a chance to turn things around.
