Thanks to the release of Destiny last month, September 2014 was the biggest ever month for the PlayStation Store service as reported by Forbes.

Sony has announced that compared to last September in 2013, PlayStation Store revenue increased nearly 90 percent in September 2014. This is all thanks to Destiny which came out on September 9th for both PS3 and PS4. The Bungie shooter broke several records to become the best selling new IP in history.

“It’s (Destiny) the most played PS4 game and the most played in the history of PS4. The gameplay engagement is five times higher than the second biggest game on the platform,” says Eric Limpel, Vice President of Sony Network Entertainment International.

What’s even more amazing is the fact that Grand Theft Auto V was released in September 2013. The fact that this year’s PlayStation Store revenue was higher means consumers are embracing digital distribution more than they have ever done in the past.

As convenient as digital distribution are to some people, physical discs will still have their place. Not every country has the perfect infrastructure for downloading big game files. Not to mention Destiny is an always-online game. This isn’t helpful when the PSN does down (which is down currently) as of time of writing. People cannot play games or visit the PlayStation Store whenever the PSN goes down for whatever reason.
