Warner Bros. UK tweeted out that Mortal Kombat X debuts later this month. It called the Mortal Kombat franchise as the “world’s biggest”. This caused a response from Capcom UK and Bandai Namco UK.

WB Games UK tweeted:

The world’s biggest fighting game franchise debuts on mobile, with Mortal Kombat X

Capcom UK replied to the tweet by simply saying “cough“. The Street Fighter V publisher feels that the Street Fighter franchise should be credited as the “world’s biggest”.

Both tweets caught the eye of Bandai Namco UK. The Tekken 7 publisher responded to both WB Games UK and Capcom UK by saying “awkward“. Bandai Namco UK sent a link to VG Sales Wiki. The chart shows that the Tekken franchise has sold 41 million copies worldwide. The Street Fighter franchise has sold around 36 million copies, while Mortal Kombat has sold 32.5 million.

The friendly twitter “fight” ended with Capcom UK showing a picture of the Street Fighter series earning a Guinness World Record. It was for the “Best Selling Fighting Game Series (Including Crossovers). It looks like Capcom wins the triple threat match.

If crossovers aren’t included, Tekken is still on top. It will be interesting how the numbers will be like when Mortal Kombat X, Tekken 7 and Street Fighter V all come out. My money is that Bandai Namco will be the winner.
