The Binding of Isaac fans hoping for the game’s release on the App Store will be disappointed to hear that it has been rejected by Apple due to not meeting content guidelines.

Tyrone Rodriguez, founder of Nicalis, who produced and developed the game, shared on his Twitter this image from Apple which describes the app as containing ‘violence towards, or abuse of, children’.

For those not familiar with the game, The Binding Of Isaac follows the story of a boy fleeing to a dungeon from his mother as she looks to serve him as a sacrifice to God. It was inspired by the story of Abraham and Isaac in the Old Testament, in which Abraham attempts to sacrifice his son on the altar.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is a remake of the original game, boasting better visual effects and a new soundtrack. It’s religious content had previously been a concern for Nintendo, who initially rejected the game for Wii U and 3DS before approving it for release last year.

The artwork for the game shows a curled up Isaac crying on the floor surrounded by dungeon inhabitants, but the game itself takes a cartoon-y stance with the only violence being depicted through combat.

Fans of the game have jumped to its defense, listing other games on the App store which they believe to be far more controversial. However, we will have to wait and see if Nicalis appeals this decision, or abandons the idea of an iOS release altogether.
