A new Blizzard IP doesn’t come around all that often. The famed game developer has crafted some of the biggest, and most influential universes in all of gaming, if not all of entertainment itself. Yet the last new creation from them was well over 10 years ago. That is about to change with the launch of Overwatch, a first-person shooter with a whole lot of character.
That awful pun is all about how Overwatch distinguishes itself from other types of shooters. Taking some queues from the mega-popular MOBA genre, Overwatch features a wide roster of heroes, all of whom have differing abilities, classes, and play styles. The core gameplay is all shooter, but the trappings have that MOBA flair.
The leading contributor to this are the aforementioned characters, of which there are 21 at launch. More are coming, as Blizzard has “big plans” for Overwatch’s future, but just with this initial set the game has already tapped into the public’s interest, with cosplay already running rampant.
We heard all about these characters, Blizzard’s big plans, and a whole lot more at PAX East 2016 when I sat down with Overwatch assistant game director Aaron Keller. He answered my questions about what was inside the package when gamers pick up their copy of the game, and broke down just how happy they’ve been with the reception so far.
What seemed to really come through when talking with Aaron was just how passionate he and the whole team are about Overwatch. They’ve loved to see everyone’s reaction to the game, citing how fan art was popping up immediately after the game was first announced. The love for the game shows in the craftsmanship of the game, with fans already talking about how much fun the game is, before it has even hit store shelves.
Check out the full interview below, and keep an eye out for more Overwatch news as it gets closer to its May 24th release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
