Sony has announced that PS4 sales are now at over 40 million units worldwide. The console is continuing its dominance over many of its competitors.

The 40 million unit milestone was reached as of May 22nd, 2016. This figure is in terms of raw sales so it’s not just counting the number of units shipped out to retailers.

Sony is now calling the PS4 the “fastest-selling console in PlayStation history.” Whether or not it can eclipse the PS2 which sold over 155 million units over its lifetime is still unknown at this point. Still, these numbers prove that consoles are in high demand and it’s not slowing down anytime soon.

Software sales for the console are also healthy as gamers bought 270.9 million games (both physical and digital) so far. This number is sure to grow even higher with Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End dominating the charts right now and the likes of Gran Turismo Sport and The Last Guardian on the way later this year.

Sony anticipates the rest of the year to be a big one as they expect to sell another 20 million PS4 consoles before April 2017. Sony’s projections are based on the buzz around the PlayStation VR headset as well as the upcoming release of the PS4 Neo console.
