When you hop on to play Fortnite: Battle Royale on the Nintendo Switch you’ll be able to play against other players on Nintendo’s online network. But, you’ll also be able to battle for a Victory Royale against every other platform, except PlayStation 4.
Confirmed earlier by Epic Games’ Nick Chester, Fortnite on the Switch features cross play between the console and the Xbox One, PC, and mobile versions of the game.
If PlayStation 4 is your primary Fortnite account and you try to log-in to the Nintendo Switch version, you may need to create another account to do so. This isn’t the first multiplayer game in recent months to see a lack of cross platform functionality with the PlayStation 4.
We’ve recently seen games like Rocket League, Minecraft, and most recently Paladins, not have cross platform play with the PlayStation 4. While the writing is on the wall regarding the reasoning behind Sony not opening their massive player base to other platforms, Jim Ryan says that it’s due to a responsibility to those who purchase Sony products.
While you won’t be able to play with PlayStation 4 players, there should be plenty of competition with every other platform in the player pool for Fortnite on Switch.
Fortnite: Battle Royale is available now as a free download on the Nintendo Switch eShop in North America, and will be available worldwide later today.
