In the same panel where they unveiled Noob Saibot, NetheRealm Studios announced the first official DLC fighter for Mortal Kombat 11, the sorcerer Shang Tsung. If that wasn’t cool enough, they also revealed that he will be voiced by Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa who was the actor that portrayed the sorcerer in the 1995 Mortal Kombat film.
NetherRealm Studios also revealed that Shang Tsung will be the host and guide to The Krypt, which is making it’s return to the series. For those what don’t know, The Krypt is a loot-filled graveyard that is filled with unlockable items that you can obtain from either playing through the Story Mode, fighting in Versus, or by completing Challenges in the Towers.
Originally the final boss in the very first Mortal Kombat, Shang Tsung has become a stalwart in the series as he has been in almost every single game. His exclusion from MKX was a bit disappointing, but we’re happy to see the shape-shifting sorcerer back where he belongs. As for his real life counterpart, Tagawa himself is a well known known martial artist. In addition to the aforementioned 1995 film, Tagawa also played Shang Tsung in the live action web series, Mortal Kombat Legacy.Â
Mortal Kombat 11Â launches on April 23 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. You can check out Shang Tsungs reveal here:
