If you would have asked me to guess what game I would have played the most in 2014 last year, I probably would have guessed Destiny.  That didn’t happen.  Instead I logged hundreds of hours into a free to play card game called Hearthstone from Blizzard Entertainment… you may have heard of it.

The great free to play games make you want to spend money on them without being divisive.  Hearthstone is on the level in terms of quality with the best free to play games in this regard.  Like DOTA 2 and League of Legends, Hearthstone is the type of game that welcoming to all.  The type of game that can enjoy whether you’ve been playing games of this type for years, or is your first rodeo.

For me, my top three games distanced themselves from everything else on this list by a large margin.  Hearthstone of course I’ve already mentioned, but From Software must be commended for their refinement in the Dark Souls series. Dark Souls 2 might not have the mystery of the original, but it’s a better game.

What can I say about Super Smash Bros that hasn’t been said a few times already in this Game of the Year list.  It’s a great game.  It’s a game that you should buy a Wii U for.

Here’s the rest of my top 10:

10.  Dragon Age: Inquisition

9.  Far Cry 4

8.  Transistor

7. Bayonetta 2

6. Shovel Knight

5.  Wolfenstein: The New Order

4.  The Banner Saga

3.  Super Smash Bros. (Wii U)

2. Dark Souls 2

1. Hearthstone
