One of the shortest demos I played at PAX East was also one of the most impactful. Trüberbrook is in its infancy, with the publisher showing off just a tiny slice of what players can expect from the full experience. What they’re showing is impressive though, with a lifelike recreation of a small German town.
The game had a successful Kickstarter campaign, promising “a sci-fi mystery graphic adventure”. In my demo, which mainly consisted of walking through town and learning only the smallest tidbits about the story, there wasn’t a ton of scifi, but the mystery vibe was strong. The developers are going for a mix of The X-Files and Twin Peaks, and they seem to have nailed it.
The town of Trüberbrook was just off in so many ways, with characters acting strangely, and the overall feeling being that of mystery and foreboding. Without more gameplay or story to go on, the demo might not have been as enjoyable as others, but the visuals were so strong that it made up for any other flaws.
Trüberbrook is simply gorgeous. The environments are near photo realistic, when they want to be, and characters have this cool design to them that actually fits with the realistic environment. It was simply a joy to explore the world that btf had crafted. After walking away from the game it stuck in my mind, and I can’t wait to dive deeper into its world. I can’t think of anything better to say about a game like this.
