Will An Injustice Sequel Come Alongside Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice?

Injustice: Gods Among Us debuted on last-gen consoles two years ago before getting a re-release on not only current-gen consoles, but also PS Vita later that year. In that summer following its release, rumors already started circulating that a sequel may be in the works, which was further confirmed about a year ago at WonderCon in a discussion about Batman: Arkham City. There is zero doubt a followup to this highly successful game is coming, but at this point we have no idea when. However, March or April 2016 makes all the sense in the world for the release of Injustice 2.

The DC Cinematic Universe already began in 2013, but it is beginning to kick into a whole other gear next March with the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. This movie is not only giving us Superman and Batman, but also the introduction of other major DC players like Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and talk of characters like Cyborg and more, amongst other rumored Justice Leaguers. Now there are rumors of Doomsday being included on top of the villainous Lex Luthor and maybe even a flashback cameo by The Joker.

This is all set to happen on March 25, 2015, with it bound to be a smash hit right out of the gate by bringing fans what they’ve wanted to see for years, the Trinity together on screen together with the beginnings of the Justice League. This year will allow gamers to regain control of Batman yet again in Batman: Arkham Knight, but there are no other DC games on the horizon, outside of the tie-in with LEGO Dimensions. With everyone feeling the DC hype next year after seeing so many heroes and villains on screen together, on top of shows like Arrow, Flash, and the newcomers Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow, gamers will be itching to play a new DC related game and Injustice 2 would be just that.

Injustice: Gods Among Us was an excellent experiment from NetherRealm to step out from the Mortal Kombat series after the two universes previously teamed up in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Injustice however was exclusively DC, outside of Scorpion DLC, and was a fantastic ride for any fan of DC Comics. Giving players a wide roster of characters with unique movesets and not only destructible, but multi-layered stages, was a pure treat.

NetherRealm just released their latest entry in the Mortal Kombat series with Mortal Kombat X to widespread critical acclaim and a sequel to Injustice could build on the originally very successfully. Even better, it could take some elements from Mortal Kombat X to make an excellent sequel.

There is no doubt that a sequel to Injustice: Gods Among Us would sell well regardless of when it releases, but with there certainly being no tie-in game to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it would make absolute sense to release Injustice 2 next March or April. This would put it out either right before or right after in a slot that NetherRealm loves, with Mortal Kombat 9, Injustice: Gods Among Us, and Mortal Kombat X all releasing in the same time period.

The only concern here would be the worry that NetherRealm would rush the game just to make it out for then, but with the way developers operate now, there are bound to be multiple teams working on games and Injustice 2 was rumored to have been at least in the early stages of development when DLC for the first game was being finished up.

With the potential for downloadable costumes from not only Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the various TV series, but also from Suicide Squad later in August. 2016 is building up to be a major year for DC Comics and the addition of Injustice 2 would make it all the sweeter.
