Michelle Obama shared a sad detail about Rob and Michele Reiner’s deaths on Jimmy Kimmel Live! She said that she and former President Barack Obama were supposed to meet the couple on the same night they died.
According to HuffPost, the Obamas were very close friends with the Reiners for many years. Michelle Obama told Kimmel, “We’ve known them for many, many years, and we were supposed to be seeing them that night, last night, and we got the news.” It was a shock to get that news while preparing to see their friends.
Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead in their Los Angeles home on December 14, 2025. Police arrested their middle son, Nick Reiner, saying he was “responsible for their deaths.” He is now in a Los Angeles County jail with no bail.
The former first lady’s words stood in sharp contrast to recent political attacks
President Trump made harsh comments about Rob Reiner on Monday. He claimed that Reiner died “reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.” Trump later told reporters that he “wasn’t a fan of his at all” and called Reiner “a deranged person.”
Michelle Obama seemed to respond to these comments while talking with Kimmel. She never said Trump’s name, but her words clearly opposed his “deranged” label. Trump has been making headlines lately, including when the cabinet released its controversial TikTok. She said, “Unlike some people, Rob and Michelle Reiner are some of the most decent, courageous people you ever want to know.”
She rejected the idea that they were “deranged or crazed.” Instead, she called them passionate people who showed great courage. Michelle Obama wanted to highlight the couple’s strong values and commitment to their beliefs.
She explained that they always backed up their beliefs with action. “What they have always been are passionate people in a time when there’s not a lot of courage going on,” she said. She added that they cared deeply about their family, the country, fairness, and equity. The president recently made other bold claims, including giving himself top grades on economics.
Michelle Obama ended her defense by saying, “And that is the truth. I do know them.” Jimmy Kimmel also criticized Trump’s reaction to Reiner’s death in his opening monologue, saying the president keeps finding ways to “sink lower.”
