Gears of War will release on Xbox One, Microsoft buys franchise News Xbox Gears of War: Judgment Gears of War 4 Gears of War 3 Gears of War

Microsoft has recently revealed that they have purchased the rights to the Gears of War franchise from Epic Games, and an internal studio will handle the franchise going forward. Black Tusk, who were known to be working on an unknown game, will be tasked with the taking Gears of War into the next generation.

Microsoft has also hired series veteran, Rod Fergusson to steer the ship at Black Tusk, overseeing the Gears of War franchise.

Microsoft Studios head, Phil Spencer had this to say about Black Tusk taking the reigns for the Gears of War franchise.

“Black Tusk has assembled a world-class team with deep experience and passion for the shooter space, and specifically the “Gears of War” franchise. I am extremely confident that under the leadership of Hanno Lemke, Rod Fergusson and our other leaders in the studio, Black Tusk is well equipped to take on the future development of the “Gears of War” franchise.”

Black Tusk Studio head Hanno Lemke says that they hope to have more news to share about Gears of War later this year.

So much for Gears of War of PS4..LOL

    • Oscar Portillo

Why do we want gears when we have The Order 1886 coming out this year.

Keeps Gears as you will need it.

    • njb

Was MS that worried, They had to buy the rights to the game. Hopefully they dont piss off the Fans.

      • TranceCanada

Are you kidding? Epic games already pissed of the gamers enough with Judgment, it was enough for me to not look forward to another Epic games Gears of War, now they’re out of it the franchise at least has hope of a good future

    • SmartApps

We have our GoW. Its called Uncharted, and its miles better. Gears of War is terrible, the silly turtle armor, the laughable dialogue. Chainsaws are not more effective than a traditional bayonet. And for a group knowing there are evil birds that will rip you to shreds in the darkness, you would think flashlights would be more standard issue over chainsaws and expensive suits of armor. And holding down the “A” button to sprint? Worst control scheme ever. Unbalanced multiplayer, I could go on and on about how terrible Gears of War is.

      • lol NOOB don’t cry because your cant play the best game ever invented..Gears of war is also coming to PC FTW

  • Ian Williams

Aw no ps4 version, poor man’s console.

    • Facts First

That’s not fair. They do have Knack

    • SmartApps

You certainly overpaid for a console that can’t even run a year old game at 60fps. They now have to borrow resources previously reserved for Kinect and the OS to help the system perform better (but still not even close to the level of the PS4).

      • Ian Williams

We all know the xbone is underpowered when put up against the ps4, it’s a good thing that they are taking more resources. 60 fps or full 1080 your hardly going to notice the difference. Look at ryse that looks beautiful as do other games, you enjoy your last gen game fanboy

        • Jimmer

I played Ryse the other day at my friends house. Holy wow, that game is gorgeous. The combat mechanics were great but I could see how it would get a little stale if I had played the entire game. I got a chapter and a half done on Hard and I really enjoyed it, though. Didn’t get to dive in too much to the skill upgrade system but in the hour to hour and a half that I played I acquired a pretty good amount of achievements for my friend.

          • Ian Williams

            well done sir.

  • Jimmer

Would have been nice to see one of the Sony owned studios make this game shine. But, unfortunately, now it will always be a “meh” series.

    • Mattress

Good to see the Sony trolls are still out in force trying desperately to make themselves feel better…

      • Jimmer

Lol. Whatever you say boss. No desperation here. Just pointing out the obvious. You can cry all you want and call me a troll, but it doesn’t change the fact that I’m right. Sorry I hurt your feelings.

        • Blarg

You just proved his point further…

          • Jimmer

            How do you figure?

        • jaskdavis

LOL, So only Sony has good Dev Studios? Yeah, Sounds like an opinion, not a Fact XD

          • Jimmer

Look at Judgement. Mixed reviews and mostly poor fan reception. What do you think is going to happen when they hand it off to yet another studio? Now, say, Sony had snagged it up. That would have given them a golden opportunity to look at this project and say, “Hey, let’s show them what WE can do with this franchise”. Now you have all sorts of fresh ideas floating around by some of, arguably, the best and most creative developers in the industry. You know Sony likes to take risks with their games. Like I said, it would have been nice, but it will most likely end up being “meh”. But if I’m wrong, good. I’ll be in line to buy it.

          • GK15

            Like God of War Ascension?

          • SmartApps

That game got good reviews. And the user reviews are at parity with the critics.

          • GK15

It has the same reviews as Judgement and did about the same in sales.

They are very comparable because they are both prequels, both the lowest rated in the series, and both had the worst sales in the series.

          • DutchOven

I’m pretty sure there was a distract decline on some Sony series too, Resistance and Killzone for example. I respect Sony and their risks, some great IPs have come from them, but there have been some low points too

          • Jimmer

You guys are kind of missing what I’m getting at here. You take a game franchise and introduce it to a totally new network of developers and quite a few members of a totally new audience. I understand that not every one of Sony’s games is critically acclaimed. But you can’t argue that they don’t have an incredible network of developers at their disposal and that if they were to pick up a franchise from the “other guy” they wouldn’t treat it with the utmost care. I just have a feeling that it’s going to be a visual upgrade only, if it’s done by a relatively unknown developer under Microsoft’s employ, and not an entire rework from the ground up.

          • Mattress

People are missing what you are getting at because your comment is absurd. Both Sony and MS have good developers – Black Tusk Studios is actually one of the highly acclaimed MS developers so Gears appears to be in good hands, particularly with Rod Ferguson on board.

          • Jimmer

You do realize that Black Tusk Studios has never developed their own game together as a collective? Or as Microsoft Vancouver. Is there developers there that have a great record in the industry? Of course. There’s some people from all types of games there and some from the Sony camp there. But they have never built a game together. And the new IP they were working on got shelved because of Microsofts acquisition of Gears. And if you think it’s absurd to consider the possibility of a franchise being better in the hands of a new network of developers developing for a relatively new audience for the franchise, then that is your problem fella. That doesn’t make me a troll.

          • Mattress

Well, you’re either a troll or an ignorant Sony fanboy. Take your pick. My evidence to back up this opinion: your very own posts on this thread. Thanks for that.

          • Jimmer

Well, I see you have nothing here. Thanks for the laughs.

          • Gears is coming to PC as well as Xbone, another reason why Microsoft purchased it. Silly console fanboy

          • Judgement still better than any game Sony has to offer

          • Jimmer

Lol. If you really think that, then you are the fanboy, kid.

          • Erm no just saying.. kid. I’m a PC gamer. Gears PC is the best gears ever made. Keyboard and mouse support validates this. Not releasing the rest of the gears franchise on PC was the biggest mistake in gaming history.

          • Wizard of Peace

Well except for 343. The only reason im buying a Xbox One is for Halo and Titanfall.

          • SmartApps

It’s true, Microsoft owns Turn 10 and Lionhead. That’s their most prestigious game developers, which isn’t much to be excited about.

          • Mattress

Microsoft don’t have to own the game developers to have good exclusives. Whereas Sony’s approach is to buy deveopers, MS approach is different in that they try to partner with developers (e.g., see their exclusive partnership with EA/Respawn and Titanfall). It is just a difference in approach – nothing more, nothing less. What ultimately counts is how many good exclusives come out on either platform and, at an individual level, which exclusives you personally prefer (if you can only afford one console). It’s just nonsense to state “they don’t own prestigious developers” because, for example, they never owned the developers for Halo but still got an amazing franchise out of it!

      • Underworld

Why you just jump on him and not the two Xbox trolls above too?

        • Mattress

Not sure how I “jumped on him”. I’ve simply never seen Jimmer before so called it as I saw it – him trolling.

I assume everyone knows Facts First is a troll so not sure what you want me to do there – I’ve said many times that people should just laugh at him because his trolls are typically funny as they are so outrageously stupid. There was nothing funny about Jimmers comment. This is backed up by him trying to defend his viewpoint in subsequent comments.

Not sure who the other troll is you are referring to. If you have a problem then you’re more than welcome to hit them up yourself.

          • Underworld

Yeah I think most know what Facts First is like. The other one I was referring to was Ian. I don’t think I’ve seen him before.

Was just wondering why you skipped over their comments and replied to Jimmer. Thought you were one of those people who calls out one side but not the other. That’s all.

            It’s all good though :)

          • Mattress

I typically call out those people that I think are being somewhat serious – Facts First is (to my mind) obviously taking the piss and shouldn’t be taken seriously in anyway, shape, or form.

  • Country Boy Lucifer

It’s a shame franchises can’t stay with the studio’s that made them great.

The legacy of games like Halo and Gears have been ruined by sub par games coming from studio’s that simply don’t have the skills, emotional attachment or talented staff of the original Devs.

    • jaskdavis

Man, I thought Far Cry 2 and 3 (ubisoft) were much better than FC1 (crytek)? lol, Gears can’t be ruined if it has not came out yet by another dev? Oh, And Halo 4’s emotional attachment was very… emotional, more so than the past games with you knowing who John is more than ever and Cortanas issues and the chemistry they have together, just was missing “something” that I still can’t point a finger at.

      • Country Boy Lucifer

Gears judgement and halo 4 both the worst games in the series both developed by different studios.

When I mentioned emotional attachment I wasn’t talking about in game emotion, I was talking about the devs attachment to the series.

I’m sure they’ll both be competent games I just think they’ll never get back the glory days and be relatively low scorers with the critics.

        • jaskdavis

Halo 4 was great to me, and half of 343 studios were bungie employees, so They care about Halo! I did not know Judgement was a different dev? It holds a 79 on metacritic, so I guess it’s not terrible… I hate gears of war even though a lot of people enjoy those games lol

          • Jimmer

It was primarily developed by People Can Fly but Epic games did have a little bit of resources involved in overseeing the production.

          • GK15

I actually thought Halo 4 was great as well. Great story, more emotional than any other in the series, kicked off a new trilogy and noticeably better graphics. It scored in the high 80’s as well, not too far from the other games.

          • SmartApps

Halo 4 was a disappointment, a huge missed opportunity by a new developer afraid to ruffle some feathers to make a better game. They instead tried to make a Bungie game, without Bungie. It feels 2nd class because of that. It wasn’t a terrible game. But you could tell that it wasn’t a Bungie product, especially in the multiplayer.

          • GK15

I still think it was a great game for the reasons listed above. Plus the metacritic weighted reviews were only 4 points lower than Reach. In many ways 343 did a lot of things better than Bungie and some reviewers agree (see reasons above). Plus they introduced Spartan Ops and Infinity War Games.

They also redid the engine completely to achieve the better graphics and that was taking a chance in itself. They definitely pulled it off.

Imho, they did the right thing. Stick to the formula for the most part and appease the masses. They still have two more games in the trilogy and who knows how many spinoffs to try new things. I’m not worried about the series tbh.

          • Country Boy Lucifer

I was never a fan of gears or halo, to be honest the only xbox titles i really enjoyed were ones that were also on PC (the witcher and left 4 dead) with the exception of a jap rpg who’s name i forget…something oddesy? I really enjoyed that

  • GK15

Was hoping that they were going to announce some new IP coming out of Black Tusk. Still good news though

  • Blarg

This has actually always been my preferred Xbox exclusive. Roll on!

  • Whitbizzle

I loved the first 3 gears and it will be interesting to see a next gen version but maybe that ship has sailed and its just going to be more of the same. But then again it might be super awesome, which I think it will be.

    • Mattress

I’m still excited about the potential with this franchise – but will reserve judgement until I see some gameplay and read about what they are trying to achieve with both the story and multiplayer

  • Ryan

Rod is a original Dev on Gears, the franchise will be in safe hands.

  • Shannon Novosel

That is good for microsoft each company needs good exclusives

    • Black Tusk is a PC orientated company, Gears of War is coming to PC yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • Dylan Foote

So what the new name for the new gears game I would like to be gears of war 4

  • Jumpman

Hell yea. Been a Gears player since day one. Happy Microsoft took the game when it had the chance, they know Gears is Xbox and sealed that for years to come.
Though Judgement was shitty, Fergusson is gonna take it above and beyond late 2016.
    Can’t wait.

  • Bear

Well hopefully you can win back the true gears of war fans that made this game happen, but like they say shouldn’t of burned that bridge in the first place, next time listen to adults and not a bunch of kids that shouldn’t be playing in the first place. And your not welcome.
