Sundered, a new game from the makers of 2015’s Jotun, has just hit Kickstarter. Along with this came news of the official release date for the title, which will hit PS4 and PC/Mac/Linux in July 2017. The Kickstarter offers a number of rewards for early backers, including access to the Sundered beta and other perks.

Sundered is a brand new Metroidvania game featuring procedurally generated levels and a steady progression system. The Kickstarter describes it as “a horrifying fight for survival and sanity, a hand-drawn epic from the creators of Jotun (Kickstarter, Steam). It is a replayable metroidvania game where you resist or embrace ancient eldritch powers.”

In terms of the story, “You play Eshe, a wanderer in a ruined world, trapped in ever-changing caverns teeming with eldritch horrors. Harness the power of corrupted relics to defeat gigantic bosses, at the cost of your humanity. Resist or embrace.”

The game looks amazing, with its hand drawn art truly impressing all around. It also plays great, which I talked about in this hands-on preview. The Metroidvania genre is usually a winner for games like this, but Sundered takes it to a whole new level thanks to its awesome art and simple, but visceral gameplay.

Be sure to read through that preview for more, cause Sundered really did impress me in a ton of ways, even in this very early preview build. Jotun felt similar in many respects and the final product ended up being one of the best games of 2015.

If you haven’t played Jotun, you really should go back and check it out (see our review here). It’s hand drawn art style will give you an idea of what to expect in Sundered, and its excellent gameplay will keep you engaged for hours. Jotun is available now on PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, and PC.
