Producer Explains Dragon Ball Super’s ‘Bad’ Animation

Much has been said about the ‘bad’ animation quality of Dragon Ball Super. Now the producer of the series has put his two cents on the issue.

AnimeNewsNetwork had a chance to interview Norihiro Hayashida who has produced Dragon Ball series in the past. He gave his opinion on the much criticized animation quality in Dragon Ball Super.

He said: The criticism we’ve received has been way too overblown. Someone put a few video sequences that looked bad onto the Internet, and people focused on them when talking about an entire series. You can not criticize an entire product by only looking at a few sequences.

The animators responsible for those scenes are newbies who just started working at this level in the industry, which means their skills are evolving right now. Anyway, they are good animators, and I just do not understand why they get picked on to such a degree

He further explains that the animation industry is different in Japan compared to the USA. This is because production time is limited so new animators don’t have enough time to refine their work.

Hayashida is unsure if the industry will change as he feels more time is spent in pre-production compared to post-production nowadays. He says if this system isn’t fixed, the quality of the animation will stay the same.

To be fair though, the animation in Dragon Ball Super has somewhat improved over time. We have yet to see something as bad as episode 5 ever again…
