Psychonauts 2 is slowly marching its way toward its 2018 release date on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. After a successful crowdfunding campaign on Fig that pulled in close to $4 million, the game has been under development with little in the way of updates out of Double Fine. Sure, we knew the game was coming, and today saw the news that Starbreeze Studios would be publishing the game, but we didn’t have much beyond the original trailer. Thankfully that has changed with a new “Art Test” video that gives us some off-screen footage of actual Psychonauts 2 gameplay.
Psychonauts to is the long awaited follow up to the cult hit, Psychonauts. The game puts players into a Tim Burton-esque world of mental insanity. While the original game had some major sales trouble upon first being released on PC, PS2, and Xbox, but has since developed a massive cult following thanks to its mixture of solid platform gameplay and quirky, dark humor.
Psychonauts 2 was a big surprise for fans, who had been campaigning for a sequel for years. Announced ten years after the first game debuted, the game has a lot of excitement surrounding it, which helped its massive crowdfunding campaign. We don’t have a firm release date just yet, but the campaign originally shot for a third quarter release in 2018.
The Psychonauts 2 Art Test video can be seen below, with real gameplay shown from off a screen. The art test isn’t meant to be representative of the final product, but it’s our best look yet. Taking players back to a major location from the first game, it should be immediately familiar to longtime fans, and help get them excited for the final product.
Psychonauts 2 is scheduled for a 2018 release date on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Did you contribute to the Fig campaign? Are you excited for the release? Let us know in the comments.
