Earlier this week there was some on-disc DLC discovered in Resident Evil 6. Not a huge deal in this day and age, but Capcom recently came out and said they would discontinuing the practice of adding unlockable content to their games after seeing venomous feedback from fans in their recent releases of Marvel vs Capcom and Street Fighter vs Tekken.

Clarification was needed as to why there was content locked on the disc, and it turns out it’s because that content will be free. The free content will include a enhanced difficulty mode called “No Hope”, and a cooperative aspect to Ada Wong’s campaign which will be playable from the start, eliminating the need to unlock the fourth campaign in the game.

Capcom’s Brett Elston explains on the Unity Blog:

“Now, the clarification: some data of this update is on the disc, but said data is incomplete and requires the actual download to access. But again, free. Mercenaries costumes are residentevil.net unlocks. Simply register for the site and start earning RE points for those goodies.

Future paid DLC – like the multiplayer modes we revealed a while ago – is not on the disc. We said as much a month ago, but that point may have been lost in the shuffle.”

Aside from saying that the free content would arrive “soon” there was no specific date given for its release. There will also be paid DLC coming for Resident Evil 6, but Capcom did not reveal when this content would arrive or how much it would cost.
