September’s Nintendo Direct saw a whopping new look at Splatoon 3, including fresh gameplay of the single-player mode and a look at the new enemies! Announced early in 2021, the news of a third installment to the Splatoon franchise had fans going wild. Since the announcement, there was radio silence in terms of the game, but now Nintendo has graced fans with an action-packed reveal.
The Octarians Return
The biggest report from the Squid Research Lab was the Octarian variations found near Splatsville – or, the new enemies for the single-player campaign in Splatoon 3. The Octarians are back, and this time… they’re furry? Apparently, they’re part of the ‘Return of the Mammalians’. Given that Splatsville (the hub location for Splatoon 3) is in a different geographical place to previous locations in the game, it makes sense that the enemies change. This does also have fans wondering – who is the final boss? Could it be a certain bear waiting for us at the end of the campaign?
Nintendo showed off quite a chunk of the single-player campaign; not only did watchers see the remixed foes, but also the return of familiar faces Callie and Marie (the iconic duo from Splatoon) to guide our Agent through the trials. Decked out in a fierce new outfit, it appears that the Agent will make use of brand new weapons and specials brought into the third game; including the bow and arrow!
The direct did also show off a lot of the main part of the game: the online versus match where the goal is to sling ink. New stages are coming – with some interesting architectural choices (floating stages and many bridges!), as well as new specials – such as a crab-shaped tank – mains, and abilities to help players pack a painty punch on the battlefield. The formula hasn’t changed – matches look to still be four vs four games between two teams, though the entry into the battle appears to be via floating coffee machines, not a singular spawn point. Players are eager to taste this interesting development.
Splatoon 3 Release Date
There is definitely new music on the cards and plenty of new style choices available in Splatoon 3! The character creator for Splatoon 3 looks a lot more comprehensive, and there have already been sneak peeks at different hairstyle options, shoe collections, and numerous clothing designs. Sadly, we did not receive an updated release date window for the game.
Splatoon 3Â is scheduled for release in 2022 on the Nintendo Switch.
