Tekken 7 Disappoints in the Japanese Sales Chart

Recommended Videos

Bandai Namco’s Tekken 7 enters the Japanese sales chart at number 1, but its numbers show a steep drop from the previous main entry, making the fighting series join Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, and other long-running Japanese franchises whose last entries have found great success in Western countries, but were not as acclaimed in their homeland.

The 58.736 copies sold of Tekken 7 on PS4 is only slightly down from the first week numbers of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 on PS3 (62.630), but they pale compared to the launch of Tekken 6 on PS3 (120.304). We gave the game a positive review, and in the UK it is the first entry to top the charts since Tekken 3.

The next new release on the list is Seiken Densetsu Collection, which offers three games of the Mana RPG series for Nintendo Switch. Despite coming in at second place, the collection has actualy surpassed expectations considering it’s a re-release of old games, selling 29.564 in its first week.

As for the holdovers, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe surpassed The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s total sales, and Monster Hunter XX didn’t seem bothered by the announcement of a version for Nintendo Switch.

On the hardware list, Nintendo Switch continued in the top position despite getting hurt again by the stock shortage, while PS4 was the only console to get any significant increase in sales, although it was weakened by the poor performance of Tekken 7.
