Yakuza Zero (stylized as Yakuza 0) was just announced yesterday but SEGA is already releasing info on the story behind the game.
Yakuza Zero will take players to a time before the other Yakuza titles. It will follow twenty year old Kazuma Kiryu and twenty-four year old Majima Goro. At this point in their lives Kiryu was just a lowly bill collector for the Tojo Clan’s Dojima Family and meanwhile Majima was a club manager who somehow was able to turn around a club that was on the verge of closing into the most popular one in Soutenbori.
The story will take place in 1988 as revealed via the recent issue of Famitsu as accounted here, and reported by Gematsu. It is also kind of obvious, but good to note that since it is directly connected to the main franchise that many of the characters will return, even if they are presently alive or dead given that it is a prequel.
The developers also told Famitsu that the game is already sixty-five (65) percent complete. So I would expect to see more footage as we draw closer to TGS 2014.
Yakuza Zero is set to release on Playstation 4 and Playstation 3 in Japan with no release date set, or any news of a western localization either.
