Everything There is to Know: Co-op in Assassin’s Creed Unity

This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information

Without a doubt, the biggest thing coming to Assassin’s Creed this year is the addition of cooperative missions in Assassin’s Creed Unity. Unfortunately, all the information about is is scattered across a wide variety of videos, so we’ve decided to make your life easier and have it all in one place and summarized!

Customization

Just in case you didn’t know, when you play co-op, you will be using Arno, the character you played in your single player story missions. However, it won’t just be any Arno, it will be your very own, customized, Arno. The levels of customization available in Assassin’s Creed Unity looks to be the most varied of any Assassin’s Creed game in existence.

The kind of things you will be able to change include the weapon you have equipped, the kind of armor you are wearing (so no armor for maximum stealthiness? Or a big heavy cuirass because tanks), the type of clothing style you are wearing (hunter’s trench coat? Gentlemanly suit?), the color of said clothing and the shape of your hood (which will apparently also factor in to your stealthiness, the lower your hood, the harder to tell who you are, at least in theory). Ubisoft promises “thousands of possible variations.”

However, the customizations Assassin’s Creed Unity aren’t just aesthetics with minor differences in gameplay. You will also be able to choose skills from varied skill trees that will be ranged, melee, health or stealth. Each tree will have skills that will benefit different types of play-styles, but of course, you will be able to mix and match to create an Arno that fits you best. No news on facial hair though, it would be extremely disappointing if you couldn’t give Arno a magnificent beard.

“Playing With Friends”

It has been stated by Ubisoft that you will be able to roam around the city of Paris aimlessly with your friends (as opposed to doing missions) in Assasin’s Creed Unity, if that’s your thing. Otherwise, if you feel like playing a bit of co-op, you can find out which of your friends are online by entering certain “taverns” which will contain a representation of all the friends (who are online) which will also tell you what they are up to and you can just join their session and getting your hands dirty.

There will be multiple types of special “communal skills” that you will be able to utilize when playing co-op Assassin’s Creed Unity. There is the “Communal Sense” which is basically eagle vision, where the information you get is shared with your fellow assassins. There is “Disguise”, where you will be able to disguise yourself and your fellow assassins as normal Parisians. There is “Group Healing” which is pretty straightforward. And lastly, the ever so useful “Assassin’s Cache” whereby a member of your team will be able to replenish bombs loads for everyone.

The Brotherhood Missions of Assassin’s Creed Unity

The co-op missions have been dubbed “Brotherhood Missions.” These missions will vary from “murder mysteries,” to the tried and true assassination contracts to “heists.” It has been confirmed that the Brotherhood missions will not be a part of the main story of Assassin’s Creed Unity, but more of a way to “tell a different side” of the story and while you will still play as Arno (or up to 4 Arnos, I suppose), these missions aren’t really about him.

Ubisoft hopes to increase replayability of the missions by having them being varied each playthrough so that you don’t run into the same exact map over and over again. You will be able to watch a commented played-through heist mission below.

Assassin’s Creed Unity will be released on November 11th for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
