President Donald Trump claimed that Representative Ilhan Omar staged the incident where a man sprayed her with an unidentified liquid at a town hall meeting. He made this accusation just hours after the attack happened.
When asked if he saw the video of the incident, Trump called Omar a “fraud” and suggested she orchestrated it herself. “I don’t think about her. I think she’s a fraud. I really don’t think about that,” Trump said. “She probably had herself sprayed, knowing her.”
According to Mediaite, Trump admitted he didn’t watch the footage of the attack. “I haven’t seen it. No, no. I hope I don’t have to bother,” he stated. The attack happened during Omar’s town hall in Minneapolis. She was speaking against federal immigration crackdowns in the city and calling for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions between Trump and Omar
A man walked up to the lectern holding what appeared to be a plastic syringe. He sprayed an unidentified substance at Omar. Security immediately tackled him and took him into custody. Omar continued her speech after the attack. “We will continue,” she told the crowd. “This f—ing a—hole is not getting away with this.” Police later identified the attacker as 55-year-old Anthony J. Kazmierczak.
This incident is part of the ongoing conflict between Trump and the Minnesota lawmaker. Omar, who is from Somalia and has represented Minnesota’s 5th district since 2019, has frequently been targeted by Trump’s attacks on her finances.
Last year at a rally, Trump falsely claimed Omar was “here illegally.” The crowd responded by chanting “Send her back!” Last week, Trump called for Omar to be investigated for “political crimes” and has previously called her “garbage.”
In December, Trump said he didn’t want any Somalis in the U.S., stating “They contribute nothing. I don’t want them in our country.” Trump has also recently made controversial statements about other international allies and their agreements.
Earlier this week, Trump alleged in a social media post that Omar profited from the state’s large welfare fraud scandal and said the Justice Department is scrutinizing her. Meanwhile, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R., Ky.) said he may subpoena Omar’s husband after the couple disclosed a significant rise in financial assets.
Omar, a leading figure in the Somali community that has drawn attention amid a large safety-net fraud case, said in a statement that Trump has “an unhealthy and disturbing obsession” with her and the Somali community. She said he uses scapegoating to distract from other issues and added that past calls to investigate her “have found nothing.”
