The Villages is one of the largest retirement communities in the country, and a confrontation on one of its quiet residential streets has landed a resident in front of a felony judge. Newly released body camera video shows the arrest of 58-year-old Jill Allison Vernon, according to CBS. Vernon has pleaded not guilty and the allegations remain unproven.
The encounter happened shortly before 7 p.m. on Conservation Trail in the Village of Pine Hills. Two cyclists, 65-year-old Air Force veteran Adam Dennis and his girlfriend Dorothea Bower, 66, were riding when a white Mercedes convertible came at them at what an arrest affidavit describes as a high rate of speed. Dennis gestured for the driver to slow down.
The driver allegedly responded by shouting profanities and making an obscene gesture as she passed. Bower later heard the engine getting louder behind them and moved into the grass. Investigators say the Mercedes then swerved in front of Dennis and into a yard, nearly clipping his leg.
Her explanation to officers did not go the way she seemed to think it would
The cyclists told officers the driver kept shouting at them, disputing that they had any business telling her how fast to drive on her street. When Dennis said he intended to take her plate number and report her, the situation escalated. Investigators say she pulled into a driveway, returned to the road, and accelerated backward toward the pair, forcing both into another driveway.
The bodycam video picks up when officers reached Vernon’s home. She mentioned that her household owned three white Mercedes vehicles, downplayed the cyclists’ account, and at one point claimed the bicyclists had been the ones pursuing her. She tried to retreat inside once officers told her she was being arrested.
An officer grabbed her as she pulled away, and she fell against a wall. The struggle drew a second charge of resisting an officer without violence. Vernon repeatedly told officers she needed a bathroom and eventually said she had soiled herself.
Reports on the footage state that the arresting officers found themselves covered in feces while restraining and transporting her. That detail is what pushed the video across social media, where it drew comparisons to other filmed roadside blowups, including the California parking spot dispute that ended with a threat caught on camera.
Vernon was booked into the Lake County Jail and released after posting $6,000 bond, split between $5,000 on the assault count and $1,000 on the resisting count. She was ordered to have no contact with Dennis or Bower.
It’s important to note that this is not Vernon’s first case with the Fruitland Park Police Department. She was stopped in October 2023 after making an illegal turn out of a restaurant parking lot, and an officer reported she smelled of alcohol and stumbled getting out of her vehicle. She refused a breath sample, and the DUI charge was later reduced to reckless driving. She pleaded no contest and received six months of probation.
Vernon now faces aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, a felony, plus the resisting count. Under Florida law a vehicle can qualify as a deadly weapon when it is intentionally used to threaten someone, which is why the charge stands even though neither cyclist was struck. Other Florida bodycam arrests have drawn similar attention, including an Orlando stabbing suspect who asked officers for a moment to finish his coffee.
Dennis has said only that the experience left him and Bower frightened, as he has avoided discussing evidence with the case pending. Prosecutors will need to convince a jury she deliberately aimed the Mercedes at the cyclists rather than driving recklessly during a neighborhood argument, and her trial is set for later this month.
