Look, we all know that J.J. Abrams is poised to rule over all of nerd-dom with a benevolent but steely fist. Swearing a blood oath with Disney to helm the next installments of the Star Wars franchise, as well as successfully rebooting Star Trek for the theaters, Abrams has all but been given a Mickey Mouse shaped printing press for his currency.

And, normally, officially licensed movie tie-in properties are guaranteed shovel ware. Hasty cash grabs that studios view as just another extension of its merchandising tentacle. Action figure, breakfast cereal, bed sheets, and video game is the official hierarchy of merchandising dogma. That’s why we are cautiously optimistic about Star Trek: The Video Game. While the title might be a little one dimensional, the game play we’ve seen thus far is pretty encouraging.

Going even further to bolster our half handed praise is the inclusion of all the film’s actors to do the voice work for the game. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban and Anton Yelchin all lend their voices to the title. Like we said, cautiously optimistic. Watch this ‘making the game’ featurette and let us know if you share our responsibly doled out enthusiasm. Star Trek: The Video Game will be available April 26, 2013, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
