Capcom Reaffirms That Super Street Fighter 5 Is Never Coming

Street Fighter 5 released earlier this year for PS4 and PC only a few months after being initially announced. The game has definitely not sold anywhere near as well as hoped, so many have been wondering if Capcom may go against their early promise of no additional releases of Street Fighter 5, but Capcom has now reaffirmed that they will not be making a Super Street Fighter 5.

Ever since Street Fighter 2, we’ve seen countless re-releases of each of the games in the series, with Street Fighter 4 definitely taking this to new levels. This is definitely frustrating for some players, and Capcom made the surprising announcement that they would be going against this trend with Street Fighter 5 and having it be the only release. Instead, they would have season passes you can buy to get more characters, though you can earn all of them by grinding in game as well.

The release of Street Fighter 5 was criticized for being incredibly bare bones, which likely led to its disappointing sales numbers to date. However, Capcom is not looking to stray from their original vision on the game, as they revealed in an interview with EventHubs.

“If someone wanted to start playing SF5 right now, they wouldn’t have to worry about the possibility of their purchase becoming obsolete in time though they would need to fork over a pretty sizeable chunk of change if they wanted all characters immediately instead of grinding for them.

“Even now, the price point of the main retail offering has dropped, which is essentially the starter version of the game. However, even if we come up with new models, we are still committed to our promise that the initial release is still the only version you’ll ever need to own with all game updates and balance adjustments available for free.”

This is definitely good to hear, though we hope that Capcom does a better job at providing value with the season passes and such that they offer. Outside of the first few characters, the level of grinding required to unlock other characters is pretty ridiculous and hopefully they can find a way to alleviate that a bit in the future.
