New PSN Intrusion Compromises Accounts

The great PSN outage of 2011, may be getting smaller and smaller in the rear view for Sony, but hackers still have the companies online networks in their sights.  Sony recently announced that a new intrusion has attempted to compromise 93,000 accounts, and has asked that users on the PSN and SOE update their passwords.

Phillip Reitinger of Sony said that the damage was not extensive as only a very small portion of the accounts we compromised.

“We want to let you know that we have detected attempts on Sony Entertainment Network, PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment (“Networks”) services to test a massive set of sign-in IDs and passwords against our network database. These attempts appear to include a large amount of data obtained from one or more compromised lists from other companies, sites or other sources.

Less than one tenth of one percent (0.1%) of our PSN, SEN and SOE audience may have been affected. There were approximately 93,000 accounts globally (PSN/SEN: approximately 60,000 accounts; SOE: approximately 33,000) where the attempts succeeded in verifying those accounts’ valid sign-in IDs and passwords, and we have temporarily locked these accounts. Only a small fraction of these 93,000 accounts showed additional activity prior to being locked. We are currently reviewing those accounts for unauthorized access, and will provide more updates as we have them. Please note, if you have a credit card associated with your account, your credit card number is not at risk. We will work with any users whom we confirm have had unauthorized purchases made to restore amounts in the PSN/SEN or SOE wallet."

Thats cause no one tried to hack 360 yet. Even lulzsec admitted that they were pro-MS, Nintendo. They harbored a grudge against Sony. The moment 360 falls is the moment people will realize how great its security really is.

Xbox has plenty of problems. Phishing happens all the time and let’s not forget the Xbox’s defective rate back when it was released. That basically cancels out the hack in April on Sony. Don’t worry Xbox fans b4 u lose ur minds over my post u can take solace in the fact Sony is on Microsofts level so there is no reason to start a fanboy war ( as this article likely will)

It’s funny that the only comeback for the Sony fanboys is “SO REMEMBER FIVE YEARS AGO LOL” or simply stating lies such as “this happens all the time on XBOX they just don’t tell you about it”. Pathetic…

But the thing is that when some one is Pro-360.. ps3 fanboys will just tag their name as a 360 fanboy. Kinda weird as 360 fanboys don’t do it to their opposition.

That woman was grossly misinformed, Allen. None of the information in that article is correct, you should really fact-check before making such wild accusations. I’ve included the real story for you below.

LIVE wasn’t hacked four months ago and if it ever was, it would’ve been reported on by every major news organisation out there. The link below describes the ACTUAL attack where 62,000 emails and passwords were uncovered and leaked by Lulz. These WERE NOT taken from XBOXLIVE, and the article you posted suggests every single username was linked to an XBOX account which is simply untrue. People tried using these emails/passes on popular sites such as Facebook, Twitter, World of Warcraft, and SOME used it to log into XBOX accounts and got lucky. In the few instances where a user’s LIVE account had unauthorised charges made to it, Microsoft fully reimbursed them.

“The name you all should know by now, LulzSec, has just hacked Xbox Live and has exposed over 60,000 Xbox Live gamertags, passwords, and even PayPal information. The information was taken down from forums multiple times, but it keeps getting posted.”

Sounds like a lot more than just e-mail addresses and user names. “Xbox live gamertags”

And excuse me but all the “false” articals about xbox domination, I wouldn’t doubt that Xbox has just about every news outlet in the world on their payroll.

–”I didn’t see anywhere in that artical that the claim of 60,000 sensative pay pal information wasn’t taken from xbox live.”–

That’s a logical fallacy. Try and find ANY website that confirms her story. You can’t because it doesn’t exist. 60,000 XBOX accounts were not leaked.

-”Oh and I suppose the comments on my link of all the xbox gamers saying their account got hacked is just a lie too.”-

There’s only three comments on that article. I also never said that NO ONE had their password taken. I said the opposite. But that article is 100% wrong which makes every piece of information in it useless.

-”Sounds like a lot more than just e-mail addresses and user names. “Xbox live gamertags”-

Why are you still quoting that false article? I’ve proved the information as fake, go ahead and search Google and find me one site that confirms her claims that doesn’t use her same article as a source. She’s completely wrong.

-”And excuse me but all the “false” articals about xbox domination, I wouldn’t doubt that Xbox has just about every news outlet in the world on their payroll.”-

Really? So now your argument is falling apart you’ve resorted to outlandish conspiracy theories? I expect more from you, Allen.

      Official statement from Microsoft:

      http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/713858/microsoft-xbox-live-has-not-been-hacked/

“”This group appears to have posted a list of thousands of potential email addresses and passwords, and ENCOURAGED USERS TO TRY THEM ACROSS VARIOUS ONLINE SITES LIKE XBOX LIVE in the event one of the users happens to use the same password and email address combination. AT THIS TIME WE DO NOT HAVE ANY EVIDENCE XBOX LIVE HAS BEEN COMPROMISED. However we take the security of our service seriously and work on an ongoing basis to improve it against evolving threats.”

Like I’ve already told you, this was simply a random list of emails and passwords that someone got (NOT through Xbox Live) and they were encouraged to try them on various services such as Facebook, Live, etc. This is literally a case of hoping you get lucky and the email works. The PSN network itself was breached and information was stolen from it, this is completely different. The only way people have been able to breach Xbox Live accounts is through social engineering.

-”I didn’t see anywhere in that artical that the claim of 60,000 sensative pay pal information wasn’t taken from xbox live.”-

Okay, I didn’t see anywhere in the article that claims the 60,000 emails were not taken from a hidden CIA database. I suppose that’s a possibility too, right?

In conclusion:———-Official statement from Microsoft denying that Xbox Live was breached – CHECK———-No news or gaming websites have reported this imaginary breach – CHECK———-Allen has only posted one source for his claims and can’t find any other evidence for his claims – CHECK

The person recovered my account onto their xbox, and i know this because i had to do an account recovery onto my xbox when i saw what had happened. The only reason i even knew was that i get the emails to my phone. I was dumb enough to have my visa card linked to my account, microsoft so far has not replied with a response to the credit fraud claim. I am not the only person whom this has happened to… specifically the fifa addons that were purchased. And to go with claim that people are putting out there about the accounts and passwords were taken from PSN, sorry i don’t have a psn account and hopefully never will. I have been a huge supporter of microsoft for a long time, i have a windows phone, windows 7 pro on this pc i am on, and an xbox with kinect. But with a lack of response from microsofts live team, i may have to change that stance.

LulzSec is the group responsible for hacking Nintendo, Minecraft, Bethesda, EveOnline and Sony. Gameinformer reports that site members have claimed that their Xbox Live accounts may have been compromised with one member claiming $100 in charges and password change.

And u guys, still don’t get that these are computer systems and dbags are gonna hack anything and everything. The only point I’m making that u totally just skimmed over is Xbox fans have no right to talk sh** about ps3 just as ps3 owners can’t talk sh** about Xbox because of their consoles own issues. Based off each console failing at a certain point in its life span, they are equal yes EQUAL.

People need to be reminded of the facts because the god honest truth is both consoles have had their shortcomings.

The idea is to prevent fanboy wars because fanboy comments are a waste of time both to read and to write. Fanboys gotta b kept in check and what better way than to tell both sides that ur comments hold no weight here if ur gonna be a fanboy.

So to those who taking my comment the wrong way, am I not stating facts? Is it untrue that both consoles have their problems therefore if both are equal in that regard should anyone b able to talk bad about the other console?

      No disrespect but.

      My NES – still works
      My SNES – still works
My Sega Genesis – Still works
      My PS1 – Still works
      My PS2 – Still works
      My PS3 – Still works

My buddies 5 xbox 360′s all RROD, but his slim does still work. How long who knows. But one thing is for sure. I don’t expect my PS3 to fail.

Other than that I have every right to rag on RROD, pay to play, overpriced, pay for pay to sub to streaming, best games on PC, expensive HDD, expensive wifi, expensive controllers, expensive battery packs, old technology Xbox 360.

Sony PS3 has had only a few minor problems.

      (1) Way too ambitious – put everything in the world that was the best of the best so release cost was $600, just way too much for the average gamer.

      (2) Invented backwards compatability but now they are the only one’s not doing it.

      (3) Allowed security to lower in 2010 which allowed the 2011 hack.

But sony has more than made up for that.

      (1) Price now $249, down an incredible $350 since release. (where Xbox has only dropped $100 in 6 years basically crapping their customers because they can “as usual”)

      (2) No solution to # 2 other than PS2 is still sold and cheap. (But PS2 is still supported as well, can’t say that for original xbox).

      (3) Security is very tight, allowed them to catch this, stop it & secure it.

    • avatar

Haha, how is security tight? If security was tight there’d be no problems. This is the third problem this year.

Or what have u. Sony and Xbox both have very polar ways of doing business.

And bro its the gaming industry everything is expensive including ps3 accessories games etc.

YLOD is a term Xbots came up with because of RROD. Sure fine, there is a yellow light when it fails but that’s nothing, such a small percentage of PS3′s fail.

And no, I don’t expect my PS3 to fail. why would it? Disk, spin, laser read – same operation. Same manufacturer. It will not fail and if it does, Sony has proven to me as a customer that they will respectfully work with me.

My PS2 fat would not read CD’s (the blue disks) – Sony fixed for Free

My PS3 I kept physically pulling the HDMI out and plugging into my DVD to help reduce ware and tare on my PS3. Well I messed up the HDMI port, out of warranty – they fixed it for free (after some customer service talk I used on them). Regardless, free.

Again, wrong on all accounts. No paypal data was taken from Xbox Live and you’re using nothing but guesswork. You’re only trying to draw that comparison because when PSN got hacked TENS OF MILLIONS of people’s credit card details were released. LulzSec urged people to try these emails and passwords on every site they could. So if someone tried a Facebook login and it worked, they’d think “hey why not try it on PayPal, maybe they have the same password and login details?” When that works they may then say “maybe they have the same username and password on Xbox Live too!” There is no direct link in this hack between Live and Paypal so stop drawing that comparison. Here’s the quote for you:

“LulzSec yesterday claimed to have stolen and leaked the login and password information for approximately 62,000 “internet accounts. The stolen info is said to comprise logins/passwords from Facebook, Twitter, “dating sites,” PayPal and, notoriously, Xbox Live.”

Note the KEY WORD: INTERNET ACCOUNTS. Not Xbox Live accounts.

More proof Sony doesn’t know what they’re doing. Why bring up how they said when Psn came back it was stronger than ever yet it still gets hacked. Keep up the good work Sony, you totally know what you’re doing. Keep defending the shitty Psn fanboys, your delusions are massive.

What I don’t get though is the fact that not even Allen read the article- it appears that the passwords were obtained from a source not affiliated with Sony.

Yeah I did, what’s the point. Sony was the one that found the problem. I don’t even understand what you are trying to say.

Allen the fact that you cite comments from a blog post, as well as YouTube videos proves that you have no facts at all, and have no idea how to find legit sources. I laugh at your ignorance.

The fact that you can’t accept not only my Arcitals or the videos and that you are disregarding comments makes me laugh at your pitiful existance.

I have given 2 artcials now, I have given videos, I have given user comments AND ALL YOU HAVE is Micro$oft saying “there is no evidence so we don’t think so”

LMAO, okay, sorry that gamer tags, e-mail addresses and sensative pay pal information was posted to multiple forums. Please prove to me that any Sony information was taken, then you can prove to me that any of it was posted to forums. LMAO you lose.
