Despite rumors to the contrary, Sony’s next console will not feature used game blocking or require gamers to always be connected to the net. Sony’s Worldwide Studio chief told Eurogamer that the new system will be able to play second hand games and can be used offline.
“You can play offline, but you may want to keep it connected”
Yoshida told the publication: “You can play offline, but you may want to keep it connected…Social is big us, but we understand there are some people who are anti-social! So if you don’t want to connect to anyone else, you can do that.”
As for used games, Yoshida explains that eliminating used games wouldn’t be consumer friendly for the console.
“That’s the general expectation by consumers,” he said. “They purchase the physical form, they want to use it everywhere, right? So that’s my expectation.”
With Sony already getting out ahead and committing to this stance on the PlayStation 4, it’s probably also safe to assume that Microsoft will also follow this philosophy. Analysts have already speculated that for one company to do so without the other would be the equivalent of shipping their console DOA.
