If you own an PlayStation 4 Pro, you may want to hold off on downloading the latest patch for Final Fantasy XV. Polygon reports the v1.05 patch is causing problems for some users, who are reporting it removed an option that guarantees a steady framerate.
The so-called “Pro Patch” promised to boost the game’s “Lite Mode” means of graphical fidelity to 60 frames per second on PS4 Pro. The problem is that before the patch, Lite Mode would lock in the framerate at 30 frames per second, but now the ability to lock the framerate has disappeared.
The other performance option, “High Mode,” is apparently affected as well, with some reporting “jerky” movement within gameplay and Polygon noting that the only time the game hits 60 FPS is when you stare directly at the ground.
The framerate issues are so prevalent now that Digital Foundry is recommending that users instead play either the Xbox One or standard PS4 versions of Final Fantasy XV, saying the patch feels more like a step backwards than an improvement. In fact, they say that the patch just gives “the illusion of running at a lower frame-rate owing to the frame-pacing issues.” Some users are reporting that the framerate problems are causing gameplay to seem even lower than 30 frames per second, with others saying the patch is even causing input lag.
The patch does offer some good things, however. As we previously reported, it brings new timed quests, including limited-time hunts, raises the level cap to 120, gives you more capacity in Prompto’s camera, wraps up the Moogle Chocobo Carnival, and fixes “various bugs.”
So far, Square Enix hasn’t commented publicly on the patch and the issues it’s caused, though it’s safe to presume a fix should be incoming. In the meantime, if you’re a PS4 Pro user who hasn’t downloaded the patch yet, you may want to go offline before playing FFXV for the time being.
