The past few months have not been kind to Nintendo’s Wii U. First there was word that Nintendo would be ceasing production of the console, which makes sense due to the impending launch of the Switch. Then there was cancellation upon cancellation of upcoming third-party games, some of which were even crowdfunded and fans were really looking forward to.

Now it seems the Wii U can’t even keep the games already released for it, as Activision has apparently pulled both The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 from the console’s Nintendo eShop. First discovered on reddit, if you go to the eShop in search of the games, you’ll get this:

Soon after, people found the games were missing from Sony and Microsoft’s respective online stores as well. You can still purchase digital copies of the movies, however.

This could simply be due to Activision’s license to publish Marvel games expiring,  – although that happened two years ago – which can lead to certain games vanishing from digital storefronts, such as the case of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, which has recently made its way back to the Xbox Live Marketplace.

No matter the cause, it’s always distressing to see digital versions of games disappear, especially when a company yanks them right off a person’s console (looking at you, Konami). Digital games definitely provide convenience, but there are definitely drawbacks.

On the plus side, it’s not like these particular games are very good… both The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, as is the case with most movie tie-in games, got middling to terrible review scores. They’re also easily found in physical form, if you get the hankering to play them, averaging $20 to $30 depending on what console you’re buying for.

There are also some great alternatives for fans of the web-head, such as the Lego Marvel Super Heroes and Lego Avengers games, both of which are available digitally, plus Insomniac Games is working on a PS4-exclusive title starring the wall crawler, due out sometime this year.
