Marjorie Taylor Greene has officially identified the exact moment the MAGA movement lost its way, and it centers on a heated confrontation regarding the release of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. The former Georgia congresswoman, who once stood as a fierce defender of the former President, shared her perspective on X this past weekend.
During a recent Ron Paul Institute conference held in Texas, she addressed her shift in allegiance, making it clear that her change of heart is not about a lack of focus, but rather a profound disillusionment with the direction of the movement. She explicitly stated, “I don’t have Trump Derangement Syndrome.” Instead, she clarified her position by noting, “I have Trump Disappointment Syndrome.”
This is a significant shift for someone who previously functioned as one of the loudest voices in the movement. The tension between the two reached a breaking point over a procedural move in the House of Representatives. Greene was leading an effort to force a vote on the release of government files concerning the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
While many in the Republican base expected the Epstein files to implicate Democrat elites, the administration chose to stall the process
According to Greene, the fallout was immediate and personal. She described being screamed at by the former President over a speakerphone call. During this exchange, she claims he demanded she remove her name from the discharge petition, even labeling the effort a ‘hoax’. The most striking part of her account involves his reasoning for blocking the release.
Greene alleged that he told her his “friends will get hurt” if the files became public, and he further refused to invite the survivors of Epstein to the Oval Office because they “hadn’t earned it”. Reflecting on that specific conversation at the conference, she stated, “That’s when MAGA died. That’s when the entire thing shattered for me.”
This rift is not isolated to the Epstein files, as Greene has publicly diverged from the administration on several key issues. Her criticisms now span across foreign policy, the conflict in Gaza, and the handling of expiring health subsidies. She has expressed concerns that current Republican positions fail to prioritize the needs of working-class Americans. In response to these critiques, the former President has dismissed her as a ‘lunatic’ and even made disparaging remarks regarding her fiancé, Brian Glenn, who works as a correspondent for Real America’s Voice.
The trajectory of this relationship is fascinating when you consider that Greene officially resigned from Congress on January 5, 2026. Since her departure, she has been active in a mainstream media blitz, making appearances on programs ranging from CNN and 60 Minutes to Bill Maher and The View. While her political future remains uncertain, she has definitively ruled out a presidential run. Looking back at her time in office, she stated that she had been “just so naive” for believing the former President was a true man of the people.
She described her previous years of devotion as a period where she followed a training “to never apologize and to never admit when you’re wrong.” However, she claims her perspective shifted after the death of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk in September. During his memorial service, she watched as his widow, Erika, offered forgiveness to her husband’s killer.
She felt that the former President’s reaction to the event highlighted a lack of Christian charity. When he took the stage, he remarked, “I hate my opponent, and I don’t want the best for them.” Greene viewed this as a turning point, noting, “That was absolutely the worst statement. It just shows where his heart is. And that’s the difference, with her having a sincere Christian faith, and proves that he does not have any faith.”
Greene admitted that she has become a political outcast, noting that she feels “radioactive” to both sides of the aisle. Despite this, she maintains that her core views remain intact, even if her approach has evolved. She told the New York Times, “I haven’t changed my views. But I’ve matured. I’ve developed depth. I’ve learned Washington, and I’ve come to understand the brokenness of the place.”
The White House, however, has pushed back against her narrative. Spokesperson Davis Ingle issued a statement calling the former congresswoman’s departure an abandonment of her constituents. “President Trump remains the undisputed leader of the greatest and fastest growing political movement in American history – the MAGA movement,” Ingle stated.
He added, “On the other hand, Congresswoman Greene is quitting on her constituents in the middle of her term and abandoning the consequential fight we’re in – we don’t have time for her petty bitterness.”
