The Kinect has gotten quite the bad reputation in light of the recent NSA scandal in the United States. Having the sensor/camera bundled with every Xbox One hasn’t done the new console any favors in the PR department. Though recently, Microsoft is trying to get out in front of these allegations that the Kinect can be used to spy on its customers, by saying that they will challenge any governments attempting to spy with the Kinect.

We don’t believe the government has legal authority to compel us to collect data

Microsoft “doesn’t believe that the government has the legal authority to compel them or any other company that makes products with cameras and microphones to start collecting voice and video data,” so these claims that Xbox One is some kind of trojan horse device to gain entry to your living room for big brother are probably just hot air.

It’s unfortunate that Microsoft has had to actually explain these things to their consumers. For a lot of people, the damage has certainly been done. While we may be able to put these rumors to bed for the time being, we’ll still be looking for even more clarification from the company to find out whether if what “they believe” is actually the truth, or not.
