There was some controversy about the boxart for Far Cry 4, but Ubisoft has clarified those people didn’t previously understand the whole context of the game.
When Ubisoft first revealed Far Cry 4, people were quick to jump to conclusions about the game’s cover. They assumed it was racially insensitive having a white man looking down upon a “dark-skinned” soldier.
Eurogamer questioned creative director Alex Hutchinson on the controversy surrounding Far Cry 4. Hutchinson explained that the game only has “only has five white characters – none of whom is the main protagonist or antagonist”. He also mentioned the game’s villain is a “mixed race”. We now know his name is Pagan Min but he’s not the stereotypical type of character we’ve seen in the past.
Hutchinson also reiterated how Ubisoft has “a pretty diverse list” of main characters. A Native American was used for Assassin’s Creed III and an African American woman was used in Assassin’s Creed: Liberation. We now know from last week that the main character of Far Cry 4 is named Ajay Ghale and he’s not a white male either. He’s Himalayan, although the game has a fictional representation calling it Kyrat.
Far Cry 4 releases from November 18th with an Australian release date following on November 20th.
